To understand and put into context for today what was done to build our country at its inception, knowing how the ideas and principles involved were arrived at is the responsible first step. We teach Civics from the beginning, not the end. Help us prepare young people to internalize these principles by going to the power of the printed word.
"We point young people back to primary source documents and give teachers the tools by which they can engage students.” That’s what BRI President and CEO David Bobb had to say in a recent discussion on the history of the Bill of Rights, and how BRI resources and programs equip students and teachers to live the ideals of a free and just society. The fiscal constraints our education system faces are substantial. National government has run out of money, and provincial departments are feeling the squeeze - having to make impossible choices about where they make cuts. Provincial education departments hands, though, are tied before they begin. And perhaps before making cuts, they could start by saving money. Teacher salaries are the single largest line item in the South African budget, and make up nearly 80% of provincial budget allocation. To make matters harder still, teacher wages are negotiated by unions nationally. And to add insult to injury, these annual wage increases, as well as 1% notch increases and 13th cheques, are issued every year without any consideration for attendance or performance. Last night, I had the opportunity to unpack this issue and others on eNCA's "Judge for yourself" in an interview/debate with NAPTOSA's Basil Manuel. Have a watch, and join the conversation on accountability, performance related pay and standardised assessments below 👇 https://lnkd.in/ezmkbASF

There’s nothing more American than a public education. For centuries, it’s separated us from the tyranny of kings, the rule of elites. It’s the origin of the American Dream, of self-lifting bootstraps, of democracy itself. It’s the original level playing field. Learn more about why #publiceducationmatters at https://lnkd.in/eWRecrBs

Thank goodness! After at least ten years in the making, my fourth book, Unitive Justice: Bending the Arc of Justice Toward Love, is now published. When I look back, clearly, I am not in the same place I was ten years ago when I undertook this mission. I have learned so much about Unitive Justice, aka, Justice as Love, during those years that it was not possible for me to write the book in its present form any earlier. Even in the final months of writing, there were many changes made to clarify and update the contents. Those who read the book will soon learn how important Taylor Paul and Weldon “Prince” Bunn were in my learning about Unitive Justice. Because of their life-plus prison sentences, others expected them to die in prison, but they decided otherwise. Instead, they looked within themselves for a different way of being, a way that aligns with Justice as Love, to earn their freedom. When I met Taylor and Prince in 2018 after their release, they described to me how they had achieved this remarkable outcome. I immediately recognized what they were describing as being the same process I was writing about in the book to describe Unitive Justice. For me, that was clear evidence that Justice as Love exists within each of us—it is our system blindness caused by our conditioning in retributive justice that keeps our true nature suppressed. I believe the most powerful attribute of Unitive Justice is the guidance it provides in how to create system change—from punitive to unitive—in any environment. This theory permits us to easily recognize when a program is on track and adhering to Unitive Justice best practices. UJ Theory also makes it easy to understand why certain steps are required and what to expect when they are implemented. For me, another exciting impact of the publication of Unitive Justice is that it will serve as the textbook for all future Unitive Justice training. Now that we are creating lessons for the new AUJ online training programs, having the book as the course textbook is a game-changer. It shortens the time we must spend writing about the theory in our handbooks and the time we formerly devoted to explaining UJ theory in lectures. This permits us to focus our live session class time on teaching how to implement Unitive Justice and developing strong relationships. It means we have more time to spend with students creating spaces where people recognize and experience their shared humanity. Unitive Justice: Bending the Arc of Justice Toward Love, is now available for order at SylviaClute.com https://lnkd.in/es9HDFPv and on Amazon. https://lnkd.in/eJ6iEYUc...

Today we honor Juneteenth and celebrate the emancipation and freedom of Black people once enslaved. White supremacy was interwoven with the founding and history of the U.S., our capital, and DC. The nation’s capital was established on land annexed from Potomac slave plantations. Enslaved African Americans constructed the White House and the Capitol. For their forced labor, enslaved African Americans received no wages, while the government paid their enslavers. Washington, DC was also a bustling thoroughfare for the slave trade, with traffickers selling enslaved African Americans throughout the South. https://lnkd.in/dyHwN9h8 Today—160 years after the Civil War—there are resurgent forces glorifying our history of slavery. Just one month ago, in May 2024 Shenandoah County School Board voted to rename two Virginia public schools after Confederate Generals who fought to keep African Americans in bondage. In June 2024 the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights went to court on behalf of the VA NAACP and five Shenandoah high school students—to challenge the School Board’s action to take Shenandoah backward in time. We are proud to stand with those courageous VA students fighting for their right to education free of racial discrimination. Please stand with us. https://lnkd.in/dfDtK2wv #Juneteenth #racialjustice #StandWithUs #Reparations

Act now! The Arts Education for All Act is the broadest arts education policy bill ever introduced in Congress and includes key provisions that will support and encourage arts education for Americans including our youngest learners, K-12 students, and young people impacted by the juvenile justice system. The bill will also include provisions that would allow for rigorous arts and arts education research to be carried out, to further inform how elementary and secondary education in our country can be improved.
