In 2015, we created our first viral video for a client, racking up 14M views on Facebook & selling thousands of their 'Mr Whipster Whizzy Whisks'. The company we were working with did QVC-style presentations of cool products in stores like Debenhams (who remembers these?). We helped bring that concept online & it was super effective. The reason I'm telling you this is because there is a similar company on TikTok called 'Seen On TV Ltd' that is racking up tens of millions of views doing the same thing. They are using an interesting strategy to drive tons of engagement. Leading to millions of organic views. The strategy? Engagement Bait. There are mixed views about using this strategy. While on the Rooted In Retail podcast, Crystal Vilkaitis asked me "How do retailers convert followers into paying customers?". One of my recommendations was to talk about the product like it is desirable, versus just plainly posting about a product and expecting your customers to know why it's special. There is a reason you picked that product over another one. As a retailer, it's your job to translate those reasons to your customers, whether it's the quality, price, story, sustainability, size, the ingredients... the viewer can't tell through a product image with a caption that says "New Arrivals".
