As the Commonwealth of Massachusetts celebrates the new 'life without parole' ruling, organizers must reflect on these developments and their implications for our ongoing efforts. The life without parole (LWOP) ban has been extended to the age of 21, allowing for more leniency for emerging adults, it does not constitute the end of our work. While it’s good that lawmakers finally understand "young adults whose brains are not yet fully formed should not be stripped of the chance to rehabilitate and see a life beyond prison", LWOP remains a terrible practice that abolitionists and organizers alike have rejected since its inception. We acknowledge the opportunity for resentencing and a new life beyond prison for individuals like Sheldon Mattis. It is essential to assert the legitimacy of our justice claims independent of the system's acknowledgment. The criminal legal system does not inherently equate to justice. Throughout history this same system indicted the acts of many who oppose oppression and shed light on its contradictions. This development prompts us not only to advocate for the end of LWOP but also to delve into the historical and philosophical frameworks of justice. By studying these perspectives, we can utilize them as tools to dismantle oppression. Our focus should extend beyond the immediate viral moments on an issue, leveraging such moments to illuminate their broader impact on liberation. See David Walker's Appeal, Frederick Douglass' "The 4th of July to the Negro," WEB Du Bois' "Black Reconstruction," and Ida B. Wells' "Southern Horrors" for example which serve as valuable resources for understanding justice and addressing oppression regardless if its popular today or never. #organizers #criminallegalsystem #lwop #massincarceration #massconstitution #criminallegalsystem #davidwalkersappeal #frederickdouglass #thefourthofjulyto thenegro #webdubois #blackreconstruction #idabwells #southernhorrors" #wethepeople #abolition #blackbostonians #wethenorth #blackliberation #blm #blacklivesmatter #blmboston

Yes to leadership that enables people & communities to have the power to take action on the things that matter to them & to influence the systems they live within #CommunityOrganising #ShiftingPower
Ending the week reading this article. It’s an important read and speaks to why we organise here in #Coventry and #Warwickshire. I’m always blown away by the achievements of the disability rights movement, there’s much to take from their organised approach not least that people turn out because of the depth of relationships. ‘The kind of solidarity required to secure a more accessible and inclusive future will not appear spontaneously. It needs to be organised into being. Real organising is a kind of alchemy: a process that turns alienation into connection, despair into dedication, and oppression into strength while fashioning a whole that is stronger than its parts.’ A recommended read for anyone wanting to understand why and how #CommunityOrganising works. #ShiftingPower
“Real organising is a kind of alchemy: a process that turns alienation into connection, despair into dedication, and oppression into strength while fashioning a whole that is stronger than its parts.” This powerful article by Astra Taylor and Leah Hunt-Hendrix argues shows why organising is an unrivalled strategy in the pursuit of justice. https://lnkd.in/eddm7eYr

Author: Until You Walk in My Shoes: A Reframing Methodology to Overcome Systemic Discrimination, Originator of the Equity, Inclusion, and Individual Engagement Principle, Former Pharmaceutical Executive, Board Member
Is DEI a bad concept? During the Civil War both the Union and the Confederacy used States Rights to argue for preserving the Union and ending slavery on one side, and for secession on the other side. So, was the concept of States Rights a bad thing? So it is with DEI. There are those who blame DEI for all the present woes of the world, and on the other hand, there are those who focus on the E and I: Equity and Inclusion. So are Equity and Inclusion bad for humanity? #dei #equityandinclusion #deib #cic #safehavendllc #reframedoctor

As 2024’s National Reconciliation Week ends, we are deeply aware of the criticisms surrounding performative reconciliation actions. We're determined to ensure our efforts toward reconciliation are genuine and impactful. Our ongoing journey with our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is driven by intentional actions and measurable progress, rather than symbolic gestures. The last week has been a powerful reminder of why that approach is important. As we continue toward true reconciliation efforts, we strive to listen more, learn continuously, and leverage our platform to amplify First Nations voices, recognising the significant power businesses hold in shaping societal norms and justice. We do this in a variety of ways, including attending and promoting relevant events, providing all Cubies Arrilla Indigenous Consulting cultural competency training, partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suppliers, and encouraging deep conversations amongst our team (last week, our team used the Aretha Brown’s “Decolonise Your Self” ally resource cards to prompt important conversations – get them https://lnkd.in/gvdkj7m4). We know there is more we can do, and we’re committed to continuing to examine, diversify and improve the ways we work toward reconciliation. As we move forward, we invite our network to hold us accountable, engage with us in this critical conversation, and join us in making reconciliation a continuous commitment to justice and equity.

We must have tailored, focused approaches for our housing policies if this is a problem that we want decision makers to solve. The mentality that if we just build any and all housing - at any income for “all” - is not going to right the wrongs of the private market. It won’t solve racialized housing deprivation. The mentality that I don’t want “those kinds of people in my neighborhood” is not going to solve racialized housing deprivation either. Proud of the leadership of so many mission-driven organizations, local and regional leaders, and affordable housing developers who get this and put it into policies: - homeownership assistance programs with no-interest loans - anti-displacement analyses with meaningful mitigation measures in comprehensive plans, plan amendments, and infrastructure projects - density bonuses and by-right processes for affordable housing - audits and enforcement against racial steering and predatory lending
Director of Alameda County Health, Housing and Homelessness Services | Executive Leader | Housing, Homelessness, and Behavioral Health Policy, Programs, and Advocacy | Systems Strategist
Juneteenth is a good day for a reminder that what we often call “homelessness” is much more rightly called racialized housing deprivation, perpetrated structurally against BIPOC communities and most vividly embodied in the anti-black racist way that Black communities have been denied not only access to the primary form of wealth-building (homeownership equity), but access to housing itself. #endhomelessness #housingforall #housingjustice #housingdeprivation #juneteenth
