Banana for scale? A popular joke from the website Reddit where users ask for a banana for visual scaling of objects in the foreground or background. But in education and science, banana for scale has another meaning. It has to do with Potassium-40 and radiation.   Most of the potassium on earth is Potassium-39, which is stable (non-radioactive). However, a small percentage (0.012%) of Earth’s native Potassium is Potassium-40, which is radioactive with an extremely long half-life (1.25 B years). And we all know where to get our daily potassium – bananas!   This is where the metrics come into play – 1 banana is roughly equivalent to 1% of the average American daily radiation intake. It’s generally accepted that one banana is 0.1 µSv (microsievert). Yes, radiation is everywhere in your environment, and that amount is affected by your occupation, environment, and consumption habits. A certain amount of exposure is expected annually.   Comparison:   - A five-hour flight is the equivalent of 15 µSv, due to the lack of shielding by atmosphere. 15 µSv is equivalent to 150 bananas. - Smoking 1 pack of cigarettes equals about 30 µSv. 30 µSv is equivalent to 3000 bananas. - One abdomen CT scan is 8000 µSv. That would be equivalent to 80,000 bananas! - Annual background radiation is about 2,400 – 3,600 µSv. That’s 24,000 to 36,000 bananas.   It’s not all about the banana though, Potassium-40 is quite interesting on its own.   - Potassium-40 decays into stable Argon-40. Being that Potassium is the 7th most abundant element in earth’s crust, it is theorized that this is where most of the earth’s atmospheric Argon comes from (almost 1% of total atmospheric gas). - The fact that potassium-40 decays into Argon-40, and has a very long half-life, makes it useful for radiometric dating. Using rocks that should not have argon in their structure and naturally contain potassium, like granite, one can determine the age of the specimen by measuring the ratio of K-40 to Ar-40. - Potassium-40 can decay in three different ways yielding Calcium-40 and Argon-40. One decay route yields Calcium-40 and a β- particle (electron) while the other route yields Argon-40 by two different mechanisms. One mechanism is driven by electron capture and emits a neutrino and a gamma ray*, while, less commonly, the other mechanism emits a β particle (positron) and a neutrino.   *High-energy photons originating from atomic nuclei are referred to as gamma rays irrespective of their energy.   That’s bananas. #chemistry #engineering #radiochemistry #bananas #physics #physicalchemistry

I wonder if you get renaissances at certain elevated temperatures where this particle or that suddenly is conducted very well. I can't find any scientific literature on this microbe, but they're saying it eats carbon dioxide faster than any other known microbe. The way to idealize something like that would be expediting the rate-limiting process, which might not be electron transport, but rather, oxygen movement -- sterically getting rid of the product.  https://lnkd.in/gAyfcjSm

Biochemical cycles in the Quran? Centuries before nitrogen and carbon were even discovered? And that too, revealed in the harsh Arabian desert... كَمَا بَدَأۡنَآ أَوَّلَ خَلۡقٖ نُّعِيدُهُۥۚ وَعۡدًا عَلَيۡنَآۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا فَٰعِلِينَ… "...As We began the first creation, so shall We repeat it; a promise binding on Us; that We shall certainly fulfil" - The Holy Qur’an [21:105] This miraculous Quranic verse can be interpreted in light of Earth's biogeochemical cycles, like the carbon and nitrogen cycles. **The Ever-Turning Wheel** Imagine Earth as a complex system where elements like carbon and nitrogen are constantly moving. Plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, releasing oxygen we breathe. Animals consume plants, incorporating carbon into their bodies. When living things die, decomposers break them down, returning carbon to the soil and atmosphere. This continuous exchange is the carbon cycle, a testament to constant creation and recreation. Similarly, nitrogen gas, the most abundant element in our atmosphere, cannot be directly used by most organisms. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert it into usable forms absorbed by plants. These plants become food for animals, and the cycle continues through decomposition. **The Promise** The Qur'anic verse speaks of a repeated "first creation," which can be seen as the initial establishment of these cycles. The verse then assures us of their continuation, a "promise" that reflects the remarkable stability of these cycles over millennia. Despite human intervention, the basic flow of carbon and nitrogen persists. **Creation, Consumption and Renewal** This interpretation goes beyond a scientific explanation. It highlights the inherent order and cyclical nature of the universe. Just as day follows night and seasons succeed each other, life on Earth thrives through a constant dance of creation, consumption, and renewal. The verse becomes a reminder of our responsibility to maintain this delicate balance. Perhaps this verse also refers to the potential for rebirth or the cyclical nature of existence on a grander scale. The beauty lies in the open-endedness, inviting us to reflect on the interconnectedness of all things. Complex life still continued at a slower pace - but remerged with a gusto when the level rose again, but how was it sustained for the 'boring billion'? If human life can be sustained similarly, would we need to have oxygen tanks to explore the cosmos and exo-planets? 👩🚀 Can hydrogen sulfide instead provide the energy necessary in the mitochondria to sustain electron transport in the mitochondria and production of ATP from the proton gradient? How would one go about making hydrogen sulfide in the mitochondria in human cells the source of energy instead of oxygen?😎
