https://lnkd.in/eE5G9snp This week I spent two days at the d&i leaders Global forum. I am left feeling both hopeful and frustrated. Frustrated because I’m not convinced that DEI practitioners are truly part of strategic decisions and discussing business challenges. We all strive for business leaders to take DE&I seriously and recognise the tangible benefits it brings. However, it was pointed out that – too often – our success is measured by social media presence, attending events and winning awards, rather than showcasing the true impact of the work we do. How do we highlight the real outcomes – notably through the voices of those we are working towards including? What examples are you aware of? Nonetheless, it is also clear that, whilst we all approach DE&I from different angles, the common goal remains the same: to create a world that is more inclusive. This shared sentiment serves as a powerful motivator to continue our efforts, advocate for change, and drive progress within our organisations and communities. I was heartened to witness the incredible work being done by many companies. For example, Vodafone's creation of an app led by Marta Lima and Ella Slade (they/them) help the LGBTQ community find safe spaces to deal with hate crimes, this is a remarkable step towards fostering inclusivity. https://lnkd.in/ezyuq_Hc Similarly, P&G's dedication to accessible advertising led by Sam Latif and Amy Nicklin has opened doors for thousands of people who were once excluded. https://lnkd.in/e2RQ6dTW These are just a couple of the numerous inspiring initiatives that were shared at the event, showcasing the true impact these companies are making in the realm of DE&I. In listening to the personal stories of attendees, it became evident that passion is often the starting point to get into DE&I. However, as pointed out by Pamela Hutchinson OBE it is key that we need to build on this with subject expertise and business acumen, feeling comfortable to challenge and disrupt alongside ensuring making sure we are listening to and understanding all the stakeholders. By actively seeking diverse perspectives from all aspects of the communities we serve, we can shape truly inclusive strategies. Next year I would be keen to see us much more engagement with intersectionality, socio-economic inclusion, the future of work and social sustainability. I believe that only by embracing these nuanced challenges can we hope to tackle inequality effectively. Diversity and Inclusion have become a focal point for many organizations, emphasizing the importance of fostering an Inclusive work environment. However, as I reflect on these initiatives I've encountered, I must acknowledge that many companies seem to be missing the mark. It is evident that the composition of the committees and teams does not always align with the very principles of inclusivity they are meant to uphold. This disparity raises fundamental questions about the effectiveness and authenticity of these initiatives, in my opinion. If the individuals leading diversity and inclusion efforts do not reflect the variety they are meant to champion, what purpose are these efforts genuinely serving? it’s not serving anything, it’s just pushing the same old narrative and the same old way of thinking. Folks, it's not rocket science; Diversity and Inclusion cannot be achieved without meaningful representation at all levels of an organization, including within the leadership of diversity and inclusion initiatives. Representation matters, and if the teams do not authentically reflect the diversity they aim to promote, then there is a fundamental failure. Organizations need to align their actions with their rhetoric and ensure that their diversity and inclusion efforts are genuinely impactful. Forget the scorecards and all my HR professionals; you know what I’m talking about! Don’t shoot the messenger. I’m just speaking the truth whether you want to hear it or not. #RepresentationMatters #AuthenticDiversityandInclusion #InclusiveLeadership
