At MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital, Veteran Advocacy Program manager Matthew McCay explains how a recent query into patient records identified 70 veterans who met the criteria for diagnoses possibly related to Agent Orange exposure who weren’t receiving applicable health benefits. Matthew is now on a mission to find every veteran in his community and ensure they’re receiving the care and benefits they deserve. Identifying veteran status goes beyond benefits, though — it plays an important role in understanding overall physical and mental well-being.

Your Voice Is Needed! Tell the Legislature to include NAMI-NYS Advocacy Priorities in the New York State budget! As Governor Hochul and the State Legislature continue their budget negotiations, NAMI-NYS has persisted in advocating for equitable access and care for all individuals impacted by mental illness. We are also working to ensure that our shared priorities with Governor Hochul are included in the final New York State budget. However, you, our members and supporters, are the heart of our advocacy efforts. Your voice is needed to demand the inclusion of NAMI-NYS priorities in the final budget before negotiations end. We invite you to join our cause, demand equitable access to mental health services, and support the advocacy work that NAMI-NYS is doing! Consider taking action and supporting our two advocacy campaigns. The first campaign covers access issues including insurance reform, supporting the workforce, reforming New York’s Paid Medical Leave Program, and ensuring children’s online safety. The second campaign urges Governor Hochul and the Legislature to include funding to provide five mental telehealth appointments for youth at no cost. Click on the link below to read more about NAMI-NYS's advocacy efforts and to add your voice to the over 120 people who are supporting the implementation of these measures in New York. https://conta.cc/3POgbQG #MentalHealth #MentalHealthForTeens #TeenMentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #Advocacy

Now is the time to save the next generation. Co-founder of Hope For Health, Timothy Trudgen, wrote a piece about the constant life-threatening issues facing Yolngu and our steering committee members in Galiwinku. 'The inspiring Yolngu women on our HFH committee are grandparents and even great-grandparents, and every day they are facing the cataclysmic impacts of chronic disease. If you’re over 50 in Arnhem Land, you probably have several chronic conditions, and even if you're one of the very few where this is not the case, then the likelihood is that your children have these illnesses.' We all know about pursuing a good life, but how can we support people to have a good death? This has been the challenge many governments around Australia have grappled with as they developed voluntary assisted dying (VAD) programs. Achieving a good death is not simple. It requires work to get the regulatory framework right, to set the system up for success, and to support health-care practitioners to provide good care – while also respecting the diversity of views. We have been very fortunate to work with governments, advocacy groups and health services to implement or evaluate VAD programs. In this article, Nous’ Lauren Ware Morand and Paul Eleftheriou share their thinking on key considerations for policymakers and service providers, and offer some lessons they have learned along the way. #regulation #healthcare #policy

Re M.E specialists in the #NHS. - NICE states M.E specialists are needed in the NHS (ie there aren't any/enough at the moment) - The DHSC interim M.E delivery plan states there needs to specialists in the NHS (ie there aren't any/enough at the moment) - My advocacy work for the past decade has included saying there need to be specialists in the NHS AND that getting an accurate M.E diagnosis is incredibly difficult. Yet....the hospital caring for a very severe M.E patients is denying appropriate treatment because they haven't been diagnosed by a M.E specialist?! FYI - Dr Weir, a retired/PRIVATE (Harley St) M.E specialist (who is one of the senior points of contact and person most knowledgeable on the disease within the M.E community) diagnosed Millie weeks ago but does not have NHS email address. What on earth is going on?! #Advocacy #Politics #Healthcare #Disability

My second first-authored paper is out and it is free/open access! In this paper, Mara Hollander, Apryl Alexander, PsyD and I explored the policies passed at the federal and North Carolina state level related to community-based mental healthcare over the last 60 years. We were interested in understanding how policies may (or may not) have impacted inequities in mental healthcare access for racial and ethnic minoritized communities. Spoiler alert: inequities continue to persist and policy initiatives have only slightly moved the needle! We provide some recommendations based on policy gaps we found through this descriptive analysis and hope this paper stirs some conversation around whether policies that are implemented truly target the biggest needs that face community-based services in serving populations with the greatest barriers to accessing care! https://lnkd.in/esCxzCAg
