There was a smile on every face in the end... ...but I can report a very dynamic and intense discussion throughout the meeting - which is what Melinda Decker and I really wanted ;) If I were to give a few take-aways from this roundtable these would be: 1. The importance of long-term thinking and building trust in the partnerships between life science and digital health companies. It was emphasized that a quick-win approach might not be effective and that building sustainable, long-term relationships is crucial – think years rather than months! The need to start considering digital health components early in the drug development process was underlined, suggesting that integrating digital health solutions from an early stage can lead to more successful collaborations – sometime between Phase II and Phase III might be the right moment (but make sure the commercial team in on board or aligned). Don’t be surprised with 3-4 years from the initial contact to digital health solution deployed globally. 2. Digital health companies: “You must be joking with the above timelines!!!” 😉 (Not necessarily, although the point about different timelines and horizons of the life science companies and the digital health companies was well taken) 3. Challenges and Complexities in Digital Health Partnerships: We discussed various challenges and complexities involved in these partnerships, such as slow pace of negotiations, ‘revolving doors’, changing risk profile/approach, regulatory compliance, data privacy issues, etc. 4. Then we tried to find some middle ground in risk profiles and approaches between digital health startups and established life sciences or biopharma companies and well as balancing between short-term and long-term goals in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment. 5. Finally (going from strategic to tactical/pragmatic): at the end of the day it is about: specific market situation of a particular drug in question, drug roadmap and risks, who you talk to at the life science company, when you talk to them, commitment from commercial leaders, what KPIs/outcome measures are associated with the digital health initiative and a few more. With the transformations in the Healthcare and Pharma ecosystem, volume or revenue is no longer a sufficient parameter to define your Key Accounts. At the beginning of November the Ipsen Poland General Manager Ioana Parsons participated in the 5th Pharma Planet 360 Forum in Warsaw. Together with other GMs and Regional Heads (Phil Krzyzek, Markus Baltzer, Janis Meiksans and Ehab Youssef), she spoke in a panel about balancing cost discipline and investing in the development of organizations. Among the main points discussed were: - The challenging environment in which innovative pharma companies operate in Poland, given the increases in the cost of doing business in 2023 – especially due to inflation. - The need to cut cost, starting with the cost of complexity, in order to release people’s unproductive time to focus on what matters, namely innovative projects for patients. - The need to continuously invest to grow, which at country level means investing especially in external engagement and in people reward and development – because it is people who bring the results. More time for #patientoriented research with #realworlddata! There are #innovations and there are #innovators who drive progress. Often against resistance, but also hand in hand with what is. Two companies that have been doing this for a long time and have also ventured into new territory during the pandemic, have put their heads together again. DocMorris and DontBePatient Intelligence (DBPi) are taking the path of innovators and come from very different sides of the pharmaceutical supply chain. One from research and development, the other from patient care and pharmaceutical excellence. We have one thing in common: everything that is available in the pharmacy goes through clinical research, an immense amount of time, financial resources and, above all, reliable and well-founded findings from the reality of care. We have different ideas on how we can improve and accelerate this process, and it often makes sense to change perspectives and look for solutions together. We are staying tuned, and I would like to thank my colleagues at DocMorris for the open and solution-oriented discussion.
