🏎️ Like many people recently, I truly discovered Formula 1 through the “Drive to Survive” show.
Although the show is a bit too dramatic, it was an incentive to get closer to the sport, a sport that always fascinated me due to its high-performance culture.
Looking behind the show’s drama and listening to the stories of different teams, I came to realize how similar Formula 1 is to the business world and I started drawing inspiration from it.
This week while walking to the office, I listened to a podcast (link in 1st comment) with Fernando Alonso, 2 times F1 world champion.
Things I found interesting:
1️⃣ I realized how much discipline you actually need to be an F1 driver. Listening to him that weekend after weekend, for 22 years, he started each Sunday race with 100% energy, detailed preparation, and determination was mind-blowing. Now that’s a whole other level of discipline! I don’t think I can say the same thing about myself and each start of the week in the past 7 years.
2️⃣ Enjoy the ride more, live a bit more - now in his 40s, looking back to his career, the only thing he would have done differently is to enjoy it a bit more. He’s more happy now about a 2nd or 3rd place from time to time, than he was about winning a world championship back in his 20s.
3️⃣ Is all about preparation - once the visor comes down and the race starts, you just need to execute. The preparation before the race, like many things in business, is all in your control and can make all the difference during the race.
4️⃣ 99% of the time you won’t succeed - even if he is a successful F1 driver with 2 world championships won, looking at his whole career with 32 wins out of 372 races you could say that mathematically he mostly failed than won.
