Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare In November 2005, the UN decided to observe a memorial “Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare” on April 29 each year. The date April 29 was chosen for this observance because it was when the Chemical Weapons Convention came into force. However, at the Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2015, November 30 was established as the new date for the observance. The Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare gives people the chance to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare. It also allows governments and organizations to commit or reaffirm their commitment to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), an organization that aims to end the threat of chemical weapons and promote the peace and security worldwide. Safely destroying stored chemical weapons. Chemical weapons have a long history, with early instances of use recorded as far back as 10,000 B.C., when Stone Age hunters employed poison-tipped arrows. In the 5th century B.C., gas warfare was utilized during the Peloponnesian War. The development and use of chemical weapons surged in World War I, and by World War II, potent agents like tabun and sarin had been discovered. While these deadly agents were produced en masse, they were not used in WWII. The Cold War era saw significant stockpiling by both the Soviet and Western governments. However, international agreements in the late 20th century, culminating in the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993, aimed to prohibit their production and use, and mandated their destruction. In the U.S., multiple facilities like Deseret Chemical Depot and Anniston Army Depot were tasked with safely destroying stored chemical weapons, using methods like incineration and neutralization. Additionally, to protect the public, the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP) was established in 1988 to enhance emergency response capabilities in communities surrounding the stockpiles. July 7th heralded a monumental milestone - the final destruction of the U.S.'s chemical weapon stockpile at the Blue Grass Army Depot. This isn't merely an American achievement but a global testament to unwavering dedication and cooperation. The collaborative efforts of the BGCAPP, BGAD, BGCA, and numerous dedicated individuals have set a precedent for worldwide disarmament, emphasizing the nation's commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention mandate. Mission Critical Partners (MCP) is flattered and honored to have been a trusted partner of this commendable team for the past 15 years. While this marks the end of a significant chapter in ensuring global safety, the BGCAPP's transition to its closure phase reminds us of the continuous journey ahead. The eradication of these weapons symbolizes more than just a technical victory - it echoes a shared belief in a united, safer future. more info -> https://lnkd.in/gafjRefD.
