Teachers are critical to solving Australia's #digitalskills gap, so we can embrace the opportunities presented by emerging technologies such as #AI. ❓Unfortunately, there is limited national data available on how digital and ICT education is being currently taught in Australian schools, restricting policy and decision-makers' ability to address this challenge. 🔎 The ACS (Australian Computer Society) is bridging that #data gap through its 2023 survey of Australian teachers, and the Tech Policy Design Centre is pleased to be partnering with #ACS to translate these findings into practical #policy insights and recommendations for Australia. 💭 That’s why #TPDC brought experts from across the #education sector together last week to discuss how Australia can better support teachers to empower the next generation with the digital literacy and technological skills they need for the jobs of the future. 🎯 Our expert workshop revealed some of the major issues facing educators and how it is impacting digital technologies education, from the national teacher shortage to the challenge of teaching a new subject area. The take-home message: more can be done to support our teachers, both in and outside of the classroom. In this paper I look at how new kinds of teacher professionalism, expertise and agency are emerging as they get involved in data infrastructuring and become edu-data-systems experts. I argue that teachers are not just either complying with, enacting (or resisting) datafication, but (some) are actively involved in shaping the flow of data power in and through schools, creating opportunities for new forms of professional agency and expertise to emerge. The paper explores how teachers' labour, expertise and agency are changing through processes of datafication, de-professionalising some teachers while other teachers forge new kinds of education-data professionalities. https://lnkd.in/ewRwpB3p

🌟 UNESCO: "We must address challenges in education data" 🌟 The UNESCO Conference on Education Data and Statistics in Paris this week shed light on critical challenges facing the education sector, particularly in teacher data. Our CCO Markku Pelkonen took part in the conference and said afterwards: "It's time to confront these obstacles head-on and pave the way for transformative change." Here's a glimpse into the critical challenges identified during the event: 🔍 Low Coverage and Comparability Issues: The lack of standardised indicators and definitions hinders accurate assessment, leading to disparities in data quality across regions. Without a clear empirical definition of trained teachers and standardised methodologies, achieving meaningful comparisons becomes an uphill battle. 🎓 Unsatisfactory Conceptualisation: The absence of agreed-upon conceptual frameworks for teacher training programs exacerbates the problem. This ambiguity impedes accurate data collection and complicates efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of teacher policies. 📊 Lack of Information and Methodologies: Insufficient data on vital variables like teacher salaries and attrition rates further compounds the issue. Without comprehensive datasets, policymakers struggle to effectively formulate evidence-based strategies to address workforce challenges. 💡 Lack of Clarity and Guidance: The absence of clear definitions and guidance perpetuates confusion and impedes capacity-building initiatives. To drive meaningful progress, we must establish standardised frameworks and provide robust advice to streamline data collection efforts. Education data is so much more than mere statistics. When produced and used correctly it helps for example teachers to intervene as early as possible and ensure no one drops out. System level data can be produced even on nationwide level to provide key insight for decision making and investments.
