As I celebrate my two-year milestone as a Media Relations Manager, I've come to appreciate the paramount importance of transparency and trust in our interactions with the media. These values have remained consistent, even as the media landscape undergoes significant changes due to declining resources. Understanding our audience, being crisis-ready, and respecting off-the-record conversations continue to guide me in building enduring relationships with journalists. In this ever-evolving environment, characterized by reduced resources, adaptability to new technologies and a deep understanding of the news cycle have become crucial. It's been a rewarding journey navigating these changes, and I remain committed to fostering positive media connections despite the evolving challenges.
In the symphony of careers, strategic communications is the conductor that transforms individual notes of skills into a harmonious melody of success – play each chord with purpose and passion.
I'm excited to share that I've started the "Strategic Public Relations" certificate program at the University of Toronto.
This program offers four courses in:
- Foundations of Strategic Public Relations
- Digital Communications Strategy: Defining Your Business Objective
- Digital Communications Strategy: Content Marketing and Distribution
- Public Relations: Advanced Practices & Case Studies

It's always a pleasure to chat about comms and comedy with Krystine Nation and seamus boyer!
I stupidly didn't take a photo, so pinching Krystine's for my own post 😅
I love that in the past year especially, more and more are my two passions are fusing together, and I can speak about both at conferences like this.
Using comedy in you comms, not just in social media, can be incredibly valuable and effective. Getting it right can be hard, but that's where having creatives in your teams is so important.
But the one thing that you need to make it work is AWARENESS.
Awareness of self (your organisation, your brand, how it's received by your customers, what are the common/stereotypical tropes).
Awareness of your audience (who are they, what are they passionate about, what do they like, what don't they like, why do they feel the way they do about your business).
Get that down, and the rest comes much, much easier 😎
Thank you to Tina Luke for inviting me to take part!
Social Media Specialist at Horowhenua District Council
I've had so many firsts since beginning my journey at Horowhenua District Council, but today was by far the furtherest I've been out of my comfort zone. I can stand on stage in front of hundreds of people and perform comedy without even a pinch of fear, but for some reason discussing my profession in front of my peers scares the pants off me.
Today I got to be a Virtual guest speaker for the 2nd Annual Public Sector Comms Week Conference in Canberra along side my good friends Ben Caldwell and seamus boyer.
We spoke about inserting humor in Government comms and why humanising our businesses is so important. There is a real difference between talking at people and talking with people and it was an absolute honor to share our thoughts on this communication style.
What an experience, I'm not sure anything I said made sense but that doesn't matter because I am just buzzing at having been handed this opportunity. Thank you Tina Luke for having me!

It’s a partnership that definitely takes two to tango. Empaths like us understand, but still some senior journalists should be empathetic to PRs.
I recently heard a young journalist at a newswire is turning into a snob, ticking her fingers to have PR’s help her with a plate of food.
These same pricks turn super sweet to CEOs and companies for perks like junkets and gifts. They are compromised journalists in my book of definitions.
That’s not what consultants are for. They are a bridge between journalists and CEOs. They deserve that much respect. You have work, and so do they. Pick yourself up and get that plate of food!
I blame the editors and seniors in her team for rearing a snoot.
CEOs don’t have time, journalists don’t have patience. PRs are the AIs you need for beautiful coverage.
I’ve been a PR, brand manager and journalist. So I know what it takes to be on each side of the table. And hands down, a PR works more than a journalist. I have no shame in saying that. PRs are excellent reminders, Excel ninjas, PPT maestros and even therapists!
I don’t care if these so called certificators of journalism don’t accept me as part of their clan. There was a lack in coverage that they hired me.
Shouting out to all my PR friends - keep the bandwagon going, and let nobody dim your light. You are awesome! Some of you are better reporters and without the byline.
I know so many pricks in the industry who get articles written by PRs and publish it as theirs. I so wish to name and shame them.
They now anchor shows for a nascent business channel of a big news corporation in India. A comms shared the painful ordeal of this deceit.
These folks are sleazes who make “overnight reporters”. Disgrace to the industry.
And journalists, I know deep down all of you want to be a comms person for the pay, and think that you can have some chill. So please be kind, because one day you will be on other side of the table and a snooty PR will do to you what you once did to an innocent PR. Some PRs are ex-journalists, and they know the shift because of haughty reporters.
Don’t be entitled. You can quickly fall off your cloud castle.

Celebrating PR Day every day, and recognising the never ending efforts you guys put in to keep us connected. Immense respect for all that you do, and thank you for sticking with us through every twist and turn.
Fortunately, things are getting better in the industry now. It's more about teamwork, and to ensure the audience gets informed. And also about mutual understanding and respect - that's what makes the magic happen.
Again, a lot of gratitude for your patience, clear info, and willingness to help. Makes my job (and hopefully the news!) way better!
Keep up the magic, guys! Here's to a long-lasting partnership :)
(And, apologies for missing calls, and messages :P)
