On June 19, 1865, the last African American slaves in Texas were finally notified of their freedom. Known as Juneteenth or Emancipation Day, June 19 commemorates the end of slavery and is celebrated with joy and pride in African American communities across the United States. Juneteenth is more than just a celebration. It is a powerful reminder of the progress made recognizing the dignity and human rights of African Americans. However, despite the achievements of the civil rights movement and other advances, African Americans still grapple with the legacy of slavery. Structural racism and historical inequalities continue to affect their daily lives and harm their communities. We must unite to confront injustices, both past and present. Together, we can end racially motivated violence and discrimination and address the root causes including intergenerational poverty and socioeconomic marginalization. Without justice and reparation for past violations, affected communities will continue to suffer. To learn more about ICTJ’s work on racial justice in the United States, watch our video "Blood on the Root" here. This compelling documentary sheds light on the enduring impact of lynching and historical racism in Maryland and the urgent need for comprehensive justice. Together, let's work towards a more just and equitable world, where every person, regardless of their race or identity, can live free from oppression and discrimination. https://lnkd.in/eahqwtZN

"A conversation on resilient prosperity for SIDS cannot be meaningful and equitable without the full inclusion and effective participation of persons with disabilities"... Setareki Macanawai from the Pacific Disability Forum based in Fiji, a small island developing state and part of the Pacific SIDS, shared a message on behalf of the International Disability Alliance and the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities during the first preparatory meeting of the SIDS4 Conference in January 2024. He highlighted that persons with disabilities form a critical part of the population that lives in Small Island Developing States. Disability lies at the intersection of multiple intersecting identities including age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, socio-economic status, and geographic location. Yet, the multiple forms of discrimination experienced by persons with disabilities including the disproportionate impact of climate change and other situations of emergencies on their lives do not get the attention they deserve. A conversation on resilient prosperity for SIDS cannot be meaningful and equitable without the full inclusion and effective participation of persons with disabilities who comprise 16% of the population and constitute some of the poorest and most marginalized communities in SIDS. "We cannot afford to exclude or leave anyone behind, particularly persons with disabilities who are often lumped into the vulnerable group. Resilient prosperity for SIDS is a noble idea but it will not benefit persons with disabilities if we remain outside, kept in the margins, and continue to be excluded. The full and effective participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in SIDS is therefore critical if we are to right the wrong and ensure such initiatives are genuinely equitable and inclusive. Exclusion is costly, and inclusion is key to resilient SIDS!" Watch the full statement below: https://lnkd.in/dbTxFQTA #SmallIslands #CRPD #disabilities #ClimateChange #Fiji #SIDS4 #inclusion

I want to share a petition with you I got via campact concerning the safety and health of women in all EU countries. "Campact is a campaign organisation with which over 3 million people stand up for progressive politics and defend our democracy. Together, we have been moving politics for around 20 years and are committed to climate protection, social justice and a strong civil society. Campact also includes the petition platform WeAct, where you can start your own petition, and the non-profit Campact Democracy Foundation." (source: campact website) If you agree with the goal of this initiative, please sign and help to keep women safe. About this petition (source: campact newsletter) "The AfD in Germany wants to ban abortions as far as possible and drive up the birth rate at all costs. To this end, the AfD wants to criminalise medical care for women who want to have an abortion and thus accepts that pregnant women could die. The AfD has powerful allies in Europe. Right-wing extremists from Poland to Italy are pursuing similar plans. Yet 20 million European women already have no access to safe abortions- a problem that could become even worse: As soon as extreme right-wing parties come to power, it becomes dangerous for women. This is why people from all over Europe have joined forces and launched a European Citizens' Initiative. Under the slogan ‘My Voice, My Choice’, they are calling on Brussels to enable safe and free abortions. The EU should set up a fund to finance abortions for women across Europe, which would at least create a counterweight at EU level to the national plans of the far-right. We at Campact very rarely support appeals from other alliances. But this petition is important: as soon as there are one million signatures from at least seven member states, the EU Parliament and Commission must deal with the proposal. This will put good healthcare for pregnant women on the agenda in Brussels. Signing a European Citizens' Initiative is a little complicated. In addition to your first name and surname, you have to enter your date of birth and place of residence. However, your data is secure and we have no access to it. So please don't let this put you off. Vote for women all over Europe - it only costs you two minutes! Click on the button to go to the initiative's website and fill in the form. Your signature in favour of safe abortions will then be sent directly to the EU Parliament."

🫎🫎🫎Today is Moosehide day, a campaign that recognizes that all forms of violence against all genders is unacceptable and calls for all Canadians to take a stand against it. Created by Raven and Paul Lacerte the campaign uses small squares of moosehide as it's emblem as moosehide is considered medicine, and is used here as medicine for the social ailment of violence against women and children in our society. To learn more and how to participate, watch this video on the origins of the Moosehide campaign below: https://lnkd.in/gHrU5bYv

❗️More than 20 million in Europe women still don’t have access to safe abortion care. ❗️More than 20 million women in Europe cannot decide about their own body, their own future. ❗️More than 20 million women in Europe need your signature to change this! ✍️Sign and share My Voice, My Choice European Citizens’ Initiative For Safe And Accessible Abortion in Europe: https://lnkd.in/efxgArss 🟣The right to abortion is a fundamental human right and basic health care. Countless lives and livelihoods are ended, disrupted, and lost because of lack of access to safe abortion. This must stop. 🟣It has been well documented that treating reproductive care as a luxury does not reduce abortions, it simply drives women to seek unsafe abortions. To change this we are asking the European Commission to - in the spirit of solidarity - submit a proposal for financial support to Member States that would be able to perform safe termination of pregnancies for anyone in Europe who still lacks access to safe and legal abortion. These are basic #humanrights We stand in solidarity with #MyVoiceMyChoice
