Started a podcast on the personal stories of #medtech #innovators and other #entrepreneurs during my gap year in Boston. Have a listen and let me know your thoughts! :)
A year ago, I met Faye Ng. She was a medical student at the National University of Singapore and planning to take a gap year to explore #healthcare #innovation and #entrepreneurship in the US. I was excited for her and suggested a few places she could check out - she eventually completed an extended internship at Iterative Health, which was also founded by an NUS medical school alum Jonathan Ng ๐ฉบ During one of our chats, we discussed how Faye could combine her diverse interests across #media, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. I casually suggested that she start a podcast and she surprised me by actually creating one called โThe Human Touchโ๐๏ธ Iโve enjoyed the multifaceted stories from the different episodes and was honored to share my own journey (I almost enrolled in medical school but ended up pursuing liberal arts at Yale University and somehow became a #tech investor after stints in #journalism and #consulting). But looking back, all the dots connect, including my own encounters with Faye ๐ Check out the episode at the link below! #singapore #career #mentorship

Help PhDs to kick-start careers in industry | Co-Founder and CEO @Alma.me | Building a bridge between academia and industry | Speaker | Scientist
Diary of a PhD: Week 15 After Academia Why I believe PhDs are a great addition to every company, especially startups This week, Angela Priest and I interviewed candidates for an intern position at Alma.Me in market research. All candidates were PhD students. What did my favorite candidates have in common? The pool of PhD candidates likely has never really worked market research before. So, how do we choose? For me personally, itโs the motivation and willingness to learn. I'm learning every day myself, and I can see the potential and rapid learning pace for those who are eager. The strongest candidates shared some common traits: 1. Preparedness: They knew about Alma.Me and why they wanted to work with us. 2. Personability: They were able to connect on a personal level. 3. Attitude: They exhibited the right mindset for a startup โ motivated by challenges and driven to get things done. I personally believe this is the most crucial trait for someone who wants to work in a small startup. Whether the person has experience in market research or not is secondary for us as a startup. Skills and knowledge can be trained, but you can't train for passion and fit. So why can PhDs be a valuable asset to every startup? PhDs bring a unique set of qualities to the table, often sharing traits such as resilience, creative problem-solving, resourcefulness, a thirst for learning, curiosity and being used with a wide scope of work. The list goes on. I feel fortunate to learn from Angela, who has implemented hiring processes and built high-performance teams in startup to enterprise. Have you considered working in a startup after your PhD? #phd #academia

*Business or academia?? Isnโt it time now for the 2 to walk better together in the #UK?* As someone having seen the view from both sides of the mountaintop as a The Royal Society Resrarch fellowship holder, securing professoriate route in academia and then choosing to transition to the startup & spinout commercialisation, business world, industry engagement and having founded companies and supported Spinouts as Board chair- with first-hand experience & knowledge- I believe there are opportunities, challenges, barriers & excellent solutions that are available in the commercialisation potential for Early Career #Researchers (#ECRs) from #HigherEducationInstitutions (#HEIs) with #spinout, #startup & #investments ecosystem. 1. Researchers - Early or established are the cornerstone of new scholarly knowledge generation and inventions that come out of #academic #Institutions. Gap in uncertainty and security of jobs becomes broader for ECRs as they depend upon another senior academic colleague securing grant funding for their role. * So, moving to #innovation and #commercialisation route from invention, from the intellectual property that exists in the #universities already will help develop real-world solutions as well as addressing that challenge of dependency. * Anyone in #academia can take this path but in practical terms- It is always going to be easier for ECRs to step into a new position Vs established academics, who would have to mull and make a decision to leave their well-earned seniority and established research & teaching love and position behind altogether. * Dr Olga Kozlova, FRSE : Yes, close working relationship between the two stages of career path can turn out to ge the best of both worlds path -to solve real world challenges with ideas generated and related to discoveries from academia and #Research group. 2. To enable that transition and to make this path of #entrepreneurship and #business formation - Prestige and career progression associated with certain roles and not with other and culture and mindset towards the value of business in the world today lought to be changed. A new culture and proposition in the #impact of these businesses in society need to be described. Association of โbusienssโ and โprofitโ being a dirty word mindet ought to be transformed with education and awareness. 3. #Commercialisation support with well established #investment to back up and fuel the growth of the spinning out and starting teams and matched with commercial and business leading experience, when done well with practioners and qualified experienced professional can streamlined and prove game changing for the sector and global #society and fuel the #economy, wellbeing of communities and generate new #jobs. . #NoOnePath 4 #Career #Science & #Tech University of Strathclyde| Strathclyde Inspire | Universities Scotland | Scottish Funding Council | Royal Society of Edinburgh | Scottish Enterprise | Glasgow City of Science and Innovation |
Itโs not always easy being an early career researcher. There is often little job security and for most there is the constant doubt whether to pursue an academic career or move into industry. Early career researchers (ECRs) is one of the most important and at the same time underserved groups at our universities. They generate a lot of research outputs. However, their career path is uncertain with very few able to progress to an academic position. Generally defined as up to eight years after completion of their PhDs, ECRs often find themselves at a pivotal juncture - should they continue on their academic track or exit academia and move into industry? I would like to advocate that there is a third opportunity, which is starting a business and this is a big step for many researchers. Entrepreneurship offers autonomy, creativity, and the thrill of building something new. It's about taking calculated risks, seizing opportunities, and shaping your research into real-world solutions. Most universities now offer support for those interested in entrepreneurship so it is worthwhile finding & using these resources in order to explore if forming a start-up is for you. #EarlyCareerResearcher #ResearchInnovation #CareerDecisions #InnovationJourney Leah Thompson Thomas Hellmann Tanita Casci Placi Espejo Dr Poonam Malik, MBA, FRSE FRSB
