Brokerage Blues: Tata Motors Takes a Dive Tata Motors' shares plummeted by 9% on Monday, their biggest drop in a day since February 2022. Though some welcomed their robust Q4 FY24 results, including a threefold increase in net profit, others doubted the sustainability of the demand upswing. The combined market capitalization of Tata Group companies surpassed Rs 25 lakh crore on Wednesday after the group’s cash churner, Tata Consultancy Services, joined the party following the large deal win from Jaguar Land Rover India (JLR). After last year’s muted performance, shares of TCS have rallied as much as 16% from their April lows as valuation comfort in large IT names attracted investors' attention. The gauge for software stocks — the Nifty IT index — had come off 32% between January 2022 to April 2023 after companies in the sector lowered their full-year revenue growth forecasts. Even the stock of TCS also mirrored the same trend with the stock plunging 26% from its January 2022 highs. Last week TCS announced a large deal win from JLR worth $1 billion TCV over five years. The deal would add $200 million annually to company’s revenues. The JLR deal along with the $1.8 billion BSNL deal and $1 billion Nest deal could together potentially add 3.5% to Q3 growth and 1.8% each to FY24 and FY25 growth, assuming the ramp-ups start happening from Q3, observed J.P. Morgan in an investor note. However, TCS which accounted for nearly three-fourths of the group’s market valuation in 2020 is now contributing 52% to the group's market capitalisation. Further, except Rallis India, all listed companies have generated positive returns so far in 2023, with companies like Tata Motors, Trent Ltd, and Tata Communications rallying more than 50%. The benchmark Nifty50 has gained 11% during the same period. Of the total addition of Rs 4 lakh core, TCS alone contributed Rs 1.14 lakh crore, which was followed by Tata Motors and Titan Company Limited. While the market capitalization of Tata Motors increased by Rs 90,259 crore so far this year, Titan Company saw a surge of Rs 59,100 crore. While Tata Group occupies the top position as the most valuable business conglomerate in the country, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Group ranked second with a market capitalization of Rs 16.8 lakh crore. Tata Sons May Be Valued at up to $96 Billion in IPO Tata Sons Ltd. may fetch a valuation of as much as 8 trillion rupees ($96 billion) in an initial public offering that could potentially take place within the next 18 months. The Indian conglomerate which owns stakes in software major Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and Jaguar Land Rover maker Tata Motors Ltd. —was classified as an “upper-layer” non-banking financial company by the central bank in September 2022. The category, among other requirements, mandates that such firms seek a public listing within a period of three years. There are multiple levers of value available from the unlisted investments as the group is entering into new age segments such as semi-conductors and EV batteries, which could deliver significantly higher value over time. The listing of Tata Sons would give a boost to India’s IPO market, which has seen a slew of companies looking to sell shares as valuations boom. An IPO may also lead to the simplification of the complicated group holding structure of the Tata Group and may see some of the listed firms liquidate their holdings within the salt-to-software conglomerate. This kind of companies are very easy to spot during bear market. For instance During COVID period most of the companies were available at discount up 50%. Good quality PSU companies like Coal, BPCL, IOCL, Public Sector banks are the finest examples of Value Investing and delivering much higher price growth than there peers. 3) Turnaround Stories:- Some companies which remains in losses and with weak financials for longer period of time and later on turns profitable and start showing strong financials. These companies are very difficult to spot on....but provide much higher returns. Generally this happen with the change in management like SATYAM become TECH MAHINDRA. Recently TATA MOTORS after losses in many quarters now turn profitable and its share price gone up 6-7X in 2-3 years. 4) Speculation:- This is the category where most of the retail investors got trapped and lost their fortune.
