Only 12.6% Creative Directors globally are female ✋ Growing up I struggled to name any female creative role models in the industry. I'm sure they were there, but they were always a little bit harder to find. Directors of TV commercials or movies all seemed to be male. Award-winners: male. Agency CD's... male. Obviously I don't have a problem with all the talented creative men in the world, but it's true that you have to 'see it' to believe you can 'be it'. And what a shame it would be if many talented, young creative girls didn't pursue a creative career, simply because they didn't have role models. Not just for their own sense of purpose and job love. But for the positive impact their creativity could have on the world. I'd love for us to all share some love to inspiring female creatives. I'll go first: Jessica Walsh 🖤 For her eccentric, elaborate and hyper-real view of the world. How do you encourage conversation in your remote company? How do you make sure people have a chance to discuss topics that aren't just work? And why on earth am I sharing an article about Creed on LinkedIn? A couple weeks ago I did a category called "Bands you love to hate." I love doing things like this because it gives people a chance to open up, share, and engage with each other over a relatively unimportant topic. And don't worry, I myself pointed out how much I loved many of the bands in the round, including spending a good percentage of my sophomore year of high school listening to Creed. I loved hearing people talk about the songs they liked, the albums that meant something to them, and the overall agreement on how awkward high school was. And I can pretty much guarantee that these conversations continued. In fact, part of the reason I'm sharing this is because I can imagine someone posting it in their work slack channel along with a comment like "See, I told you they were cool!" When I explain what Anywhere League is about, it's hard to immediately recall anecdotes like this or describe what they mean to a company. But I see time and time again how conversations like this can create strong bonds amongst remote employees. Do you sheen or shine? A broadcaster’s mispronunciation on the radio this morning (juggernaut Far-East manufacturers looking at stock-market listing. You can probably guess) stuck in my ear, as always with the English there’s a slippery face between similar sounding words and meanings, But I couldn’t immediately put my finger on the difference between the two in the title. Or even if there was one. However a quick look beyond the surface is very revealing. Shines are sharp. Very polished. Highly reflective. Easy to see yourself in it. But shininess can also be a rather less than flattering term, as ’shiny’ people. Bubble-gummy. Overly optimistic. A bit, well, shiny. No particularily deep. Which s’fine. Shiny things catch the eye and bring a little joy when discovered (ask any magpie.) Sheeny, though, is a whole different thing. Sheen is duller somehow. More diffuse. Some would say subtler. It also feels more like something added than shine’s revealingness. To put a sheen on is polish in some obscuring effect. Discussing things a high-polish would (perhaps unfortunately reveal.) All this leads me back to the original aura confusion, and that Shein (pronounced, I think, ‘sheen’), which started life as the snappy-sounding ‘ZZKKO’. Three years later (in 2011), it had morphed into ‘SheInside’, which clearly wasn’t going to travel well. By 2019 the ‘-side’ was gone. Leaving us with the shiny shortened version. "A Spike Lee joint." "A Steven Spielberg film." "A film by Wes Anderson." These creators have cultivated a track record of expertise that gives them something more than a personal brand: it gives them authority. When they want a project, they're given carte blanche. When the film is promoted, their name carries it to market. They have loyal fans who will watch and re-watch anything they create. 🤔 When something gets published on your brand's website, who is the author? Your company? A content marketer? Or an expert? Is your brand being used to elevate a no-name author's personal brand, or are you able to attract creative and authoritative talent that elevates your company's brand? Just something to think about. PS - I was trying to think of female directors to include, and Greta Gerwig came to mind, but she's not getting this kind of promotion... yet. Barbie was so good. Let's get more female directors, please.
