A bill introduced in the #California #Assembly, #AB1990 or the STOP Act aims to combat organized #retailcrime by allowing peace officers to make warrantless arrests for misdemeanor #shoplifting offenses based on probable cause. Key points include: 1. The bill is authored by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, who cites the escalation of organized #retailtheft as a threat to businesses, the state's #economy, and #publicsafety. 2. AB 1990 would amend Section 836 of the Penal Code to permit warrantless arrests for shoplifting violations not committed in the officer's presence, based on probable cause and a sworn statement from a witness. 3. The bill passed the Assembly with a vote of 44-1, with 35 lawmakers not casting a vote, including 32 Democrats and the Assembly speaker. 4. Progressive Democrats were uncomfortable with the bill, fearing it could lead to increased harassment and incarceration of people of color for minor offenses. 5. Assemblymember Ash Kalra was the only legislator to vote "no," while others, like Assemblymember Tina Mckinnor, spoke against the bill but did not vote. 6. I am often confused by politicians and their lack of ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner. It is likely because many of them know they are lying straight away. "Congestion Pricing," is an absurd name for this new potential law; we should simply be calling it an additional tax and argue its merits as to whether generating more revenue on the backs of those who already currently generate most of the revenue for the city is an intelligent and reasonable way of operating to benefit folks who may or may not live here, like or approve of our way of life, and have no intention of contributing positively to our society. Claiming environmental benefits from this new tax on commuters and residents is extremely thin and baseless logic. I would ask all politicians who approve this law, where will the funds ACTUALLY go? What benefits of this additional billion dollars will there be for the taxpayers, business owners, job creators and families of this city? And please, be specific. If we can realize safer streets, better schools, better paid and motivated police officers and fire fighters and EMT's, I am in favor! Good luck to us all. https://lnkd.in/dzjpG3QV
