Speaking without words. Have you ever worked with anyone where you can anticipate what they need or are thinking without speaking a single word? Being in a flow state yourself is cool, but when you get there with someone else it is truly special. My dad and I could work like that. Woodworking, repairing a car, etc. He was (is) great at showing me how to do things - patiently and with a great explanation of why that step was important at that time. Example: Framing a house. He made it a point to have studs in places where he knew the sheetrock would need to be anchored. Even if he wasn't doing the drywall work, he knew it would make their job easier. Over time, I could anticipate the tool he would need next, or where the light needed to be shined for him to get at a bolt in an engine. I'd just hand him the tool and move the light - no words exchanged. We'd work that way for hours. I miss it. Very few people get there. I've worked a few others like this. Most notably, Bob Bradley. Bob and I have been to war several times, building companies together. Each time we sit down at a new venture we don't miss a beat. He just knows what needs to be done, and what I should be doing....and it just happens. One of hardest workers I know. Think back on your work life - does anyone standout like this? If so, call them and thank them. Then if you can, work with them again :-).

My first job was for my father, a painting contractor of 35 years. I’ve since straddled the lines of #bluecollar and #whitecollar Having studied film, writing, and #production , I’ve worked both above and below the line. The balance of manual labor and creative labor. That balance along with sense of equal parts #collaboration and #innovation has served me well in #sales and #businessdevelopment For the #technology world Where I have sold and worked in blue collar spaces. #homeservices #construction #manufacturing As well as #restaurants #hospitality #retail And I’ve been in the white collar world as well, of course in other areas, ie #education #medical #nonprofit I’ve been an individual contributor. I’ve been a team player. I’ve been a leader. At companies of all shapes and sizes. I don’t know that I fit into the generic boxes if you will. But I wear my blue and white collar badges with pride. They have helped me grow companies, in my long-term relationships with clients, and in my own projects. I like to use the term #collarjump which I think folks in this country can use more of. It’s not stalling, it’s strategic. One of the surprises new Nest clients find is that, often, we won’t completely revamp their creative approach. And if we do, it’s never done immediately. This is true even when we’ve been hired because they’ve maxed out performance in-house. Most accounts that we see are flush with inefficiencies. They’re throttling reach, their structure is inefficient, and their campaigns are overlapping. The changes we can make at a structural level will have a greater impact on performance than the work we do on creative. You wouldn’t start painting your house before you’d built all four walls, would you?
