***Montgomery UK Announcement*** Despite a relatively flat UK market over the last 18 months Montgomery's London office is bucking the trend and expanding! We are excited to welcome one of our experienced consultants from Australia in James Cockerill to the London team. James brings with him over 7 years legal recruitment experience and having placed Australian and New Zealand lawyers into London from afar, is very excited to finally be on the ground in London. While our bread and butter is placing UK based Associates laterally, given we are dual headquartered in Sydney and London, we are also the go to legal recruitment firm for lawyers looking to move to London from down under or indeed looking to embark on an adventure to Australia. If you are interested in learning about opportunities in London or indeed Australia please reach out to Sam Gray or James Cockerill to learn more.

London is tricky right now. I’ve been having a lot of conversations with lawyers this week about overseas moves, specifically about what their chances are of securing a role in London. With a decline in opportunities (especially for junior to mid level lawyers) and the rising cost of living, we are seeing lawyers pivot their searches to more favourable international jurisdictions (e.g. Australia, US, Ireland, Offshore, & Asia). So, what about making a move to Australia? With direct links into main business centres, the Australian legal sector has a strong global presence. Firms operate at the forefront of significant transactions, offering career defining work. We are working with a number of premier law firms in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane in particular that have vacancies at the 2-10 PAE level, which would provide excellent work, lifestyle and salary benefits. And with sunrises such as this one I experienced in Bondi this morning, why wouldn't you live/work in Australia?! #LegalRecruitment #LondonLegalMarket #AustralianLegalMarket #BeaconLegal #bondibeach

Have you been contemplating a lifestyle move to NZ, but you don’t want to compromise your legal career? Find out more about what it’s like to work at one of New Zealand’s top law firms, when our senior leaders are in London in May. Simpson Grierson’s Board Chair, Phillipa Muir, together with Managing Partner Andrew Harkness as well as Litigation Partner James Craig and Corporate Partner Andrew Matthews will be in London from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 May. They’ll be interviewing for the legal roles we have across all practice areas and levels of our firm and they’re keen to meet up if you’d like to talk about future opportunities with us. Even if you’re not thinking about moving, or returning, to NZ for another couple of years, you can have a chat about our flexible hiring approach and what it’s like to live and work here. By the way, if we hire you, we’ll pay relocation expenses and offer immigration assistance as well as offer lots of practical help. To arrange a confidential chat with Pip, Andrew, James or Andrew, please get in touch with our Recruitment Manager, Jackie Mulligan (Ellis). #recruitment #London #lawfirm #legal #SimpsonGrierson

If you are an 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞, this will become easier from the end of this month when changes to the Youth Mobility Scheme come into effect. The age of eligibility has been raised from 30 to 35, and both Australians and New Zealanders can also now stay for up to three years in the UK. While the market for international moves has definitely slowed compared to previous years, they are still possible in key areas for those with the right CVs. Firm background, experience and academics—as well as someone’s reasons for making a prior move—are all being examined more closely. Hiring is currently based on strategic needs and employee attrition rather than a desire for growth. It's still a good time to pursue a move to the UK because: • London law firms know that Australia produces bright lawyers educated at some of the world’s best law schools, who work hard and have a track record of doing really well in the UK, particularly in transactional areas. • Salaries are higher for similar work – and you are likely to be exposed to more complex transactional experience to enhance your skills. • When you return to Australia/New Zealand you will take valuable client and referral relationships back with you which will help your progression towards partnership. If this sounds attractive and you would like to discuss your options please contact me at [email protected] or one of my London based colleagues: Alex Russell, Michelle Mills, Tim Andrews or Sonia Patel or alternatively please contact one of my Australian based colleagues Ben Smith, Daniel Hogan, Jonathan Walmsley or Jak Yasuda #australia #newzealand #asia #internationalmoves #legalrecruitment #marsden #youthmobility

Top Tier Kiwi Lawyer: "I hadn't considered the Australia to London route previously" Forward-thinking about a shift to the UK, they wanted to know what career moves they'd need to make for an accelerated pathway into a magic/silver circle firm in London. I suggested they make a move into a band 1 team in the Australian market. How will a move from NZ to AUS enhance their career? Positioning themselves within a top tier/leading international firm in Australia will help them build their deals/matter sheet, given the sophistication of clients, deal value and volume of work, Plus they'll have a globally recognised firm on their CV, Giving them stronger job prospects in the London market. If you're starting to think about a move to London, it's important to get up-to-date information on market activity for your practice area/level and tailored advice on how best to structure your move to London.
