Is there a scenario where transparency in local government is ill-advised? Should the public have the right to know who all the candidates are for a City Manager role? Does this transparency negatively impact attracting a large candidate pool? The following article highlights two concurrent City Manager searches in Florida (New Smyrna Beach and Treasure Island). Due to Florida law allowing the names of all candidates to be made public at an early stage in the recruitment process, the news has identified James Slaton as a candidate for both communities as well as identifying other semi-finalists and alternates candidates. My take is that the value of the transparency sought here is significantly outweighed by the damage it does to potential candidates and the hesitancy of employed City Managers to check out these opportunities. The vetting and scrutiny of these candidates needs to be handled by the recruitment firm and the elected officials. Having the public watching the process to me provides no value to the decision making process and reeks of gossiping and reality TV. Reposting for my NQSWs, sadly a lot of local authorities will not use agencies to fill roles like this due to the number of applications they get. If you have just finished your degree this is a great opportunity to start your career in Social Work. This is the hardest part of my job, telling NQSWs that we are very limited on how much we can help. I try to give as much advice as possible but that's as much as we can do most times. The general advice is: Once you have sent your CV, follow up with an email (HR, Team Managers and Service Managers). 🤪 If you don't have their emails, LinkedIn! You're on here to network so network! Connect and drop them a message. 🤝 Follow up the week after. Make sure they can not forget your name. 🫡 Also lean on those you know, everyone always feels cheeky asking someone they know for help but if you don't ask, you don't get. When you first move to London... I’ve had some amazing conversations with people this week and it’s sparked multiple moments to reflect. I first moved to London, 2.5 years ago, it was to pursue my career in recruitment, working with exciting brands and interesting people. It wasn’t an easy opportunity to find in my hometown near Norwich. I’ve always been an ambitious social butterfly who always felt the people who have good hearts and work hard deserve more. (Why I fell into recruitment) So, in an interview, I was asked to move my life to London. I did it, all in the space of two weeks. Although the single bedroom I rented in Paddington wasn’t as awful as in the bottom image, it still wasn’t great. (The desire to move deffo motivated me more) 😂 Skip forward to today, I’ve worked my way from an Associate>Consultant>Senior Consultant, met some fantastic people and live in a beautiful apartment with some phenomenal amenities. I get that this city won’t be for everyone, but if you are thinking about a move to London to pursue greater things in your career and life, then definitely do it. It is not often that General Counsel actually spend time listening to another General Counsel talk through their career in intimate detail. The learnings were profound - we heard so many pearls of wisdom through the power of Andrew Garard's career story including: • how to truly partner with law firms, building lasting relationships where both parties benefit; • how to practically incentivise in-house lawyers throughout their careers, actively ensuring that they leave the fold (which they inevitably will do) with a much better CV and skill set than when they arrived; • how to engage with CEOs and the C-Suite as an impactful General Counsel, working with integrity and purpose, with the requisite levers and then how to walk away when you realise the role isn't going to allow you to do this; • how to mobilise your network at both a granular and strategic level, which will set you up for a long lasting career; • how to listen to develop consistent and values driven competencies when hiring for your team; • how to seek to help, and not just to please; • how to look after your existing team as you leave and how not to burn bridges. The list goes on. If I had my way, Winmark would host a follow on session for the lucky attendees, and others who want to attend, so that we can deep dive more into the stories and the detail of how Andrew has navigated through his career.
