Happy July! Here's some great tips for starting your plastic free journey at work with Plastic Free July! Is your workplace participating this year?
Business Owner at Reusable Planet | Strategic Corporate Communications Consultant | Less Waste Advocate
Are you ready for Plastic Free July? Completely Plastic Free sounds like a lot. And it is! Lucky that's not really what Plastic Free July is all about! You can participate just a little [like becoming aware of the plastic pollution problem, and the affects it is having on people and planet], to participating a bit [like auditing your own use of single-use plastic and discovering where you can cut back] right up to refusing as much single use plastic as you can for the entire month - and beyond! Get the office involved! Start by using BYO cups for barista coffee and help reduce the more than 1 BILLION plastic lined coffee cups and their lids that get discarded by Aussies every year. Avoid bottled water. Use jugs and glasses in the meeting room. Take your own hydration with you to meetings out of the office. It doesn't have to be hard! Just taking a few steps like this every day can add up to a big difference. I'd love to know if you're participating in Plastic Free July this year...

Let's have a shout-out to the Chicago Women-Owned sustainable businesses making waves in a world obsessed with single-use, dirt-cheap plastic bottles. We had the chance to talk to two companies that are committed to giving plastic a run for their money. We were giddy after our conversation with Manuela Zoninsein. Her company, Kadeya designed a closed-loop hydration station. It is like Divvy for beverages. What we love most is her commitment to making it affordable and convenient (for the customer & the building owner). We also had a lovely conversation with another Chicago-based company, Open Water. They are walking the walk of sustainability. They use a circular closed-loop cycle and the highest PCR (post-consumer recycled) content in the industry. Then they offset any remaining emissions, so they are a climate-neutral company. We love their capped cans because they are refillable! Gotta love double-duty products :) #womenowned #innovation #localbusiness #chicago #ditchplastic #sustainabilitymatters
Kadeya on Instagram: "The act ii of bottled H2O 💧 Say goodbye to single-use plastic bottles forever with Kadeya’s closed-loop hydration station Grab your favorite drinks or filtered water in a reusable stainless steel iinfinite bottle ♾️ When you’re done return the bottle to the station where it is cleaned, sanitized, and refilled… again & again & again… 💧 No more plastic bottle waste 💧 Filtrat

Happy Plastic Free July folks! Byron Shire Council has developed a Single Use Materials & Packaging Policy. It's bold. It is seeking to phase out a long list of single use items from council operations as well as what's allowed in the halls and open spaces they own or manage. Mullum Cares and other reuse specialists have been engaged to support local events and markets to identify and remove barriers to achieving compliance with the policy. We are embracing the energy and community spirit of the Plastic Free July movement (again!) to inspire and enable a whole of community approach to ending single use take away items including coffee cups and smoothie cups, single use plates, bowls trays and cutlery - at our local monthly markets. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of drinks and lunches are consumed at bustling outdoor markets so it's instantly obvious the stock of reusables required to service effectively 10 - 20 or more mobile cafes (laterally thinking about what a market vendors represents). To minimise the size of the reusables stock that is going to be required to replace single use at these monthly events we have elected to focus during July on inviting our community to BYO and share the burden of this massive shift. Imagine a world where it's completely normal for the customer to supply the cup or container for the drink or lunch to be put in/on.... there would be no need for massive stocks of reusables to be purchased, stored and managed by every event that now relies on compact, lightweight single use. It feels like we need to develop three new norms to eradicate unrecylable single use food and beverage containers designed for instant consumption. 1. Regulation - Ban all non recyclable, single use take away coffee and smoothie cups, take away plates, bowls, eating implements, trays and take away containers designed for the contents to be consumed immediately. 2. Consumer behaviour change - the regulation will mean consumers need to either BYO or find business that have reusable options. 3. Businesses will adapt - if they want take away business they will get reusables that work and charge the additional cost to customers who don't BYO. If a cafe wanted to they could order a stock of Huskee coffee cups and a stock of Decor take away containers with lids and some simple metal cutlery and put a sign up that says: "Please remember to BYO your take away container needs or be prepared to hire our reusables as we no longer supply single use options". We know the reason cafes don't do this is because of the reality of competition and convenience. The only way that scenario will come to fruition is with regulation. Come on EPA. What are you waiting for? I know the answer - more reusable lightweight products and suppliers to help us all manage this transition. If you know someone that can help please let me know.

Transforming Success Into Significance | TEDx Speaker | Award Winning Thought Leader | Best Selling Author
🌍 Today is International Plastic Bag Free Day! Globally, we use over 1 trillion plastic bags every year? That’s like wrapping the entire planet in a plastic blanket every few minutes. It’s shocking, right? 🐢 These bags don’t just disappear after we use them. They take centuries to break down, and in the meantime, they wreak havoc on our oceans and wildlife. Turtles mistake them for jellyfish, and seabirds get tangled up in them. They break down into tiny pieces that fish and other marine life end up eating. 🌊 The toxins from these bags then make their way up the food chain, ending up on our plates. It’s not just about litter; it’s about the health of our planet and ourselves. But we can all do something about it: 1️⃣ Bring Your Own Bag: Grab a reusable bag when you head out shopping. It’s an easy swap that can make a big difference. 2️⃣ Spread the Word: Share this post and let your friends and family know about the impact of plastic bags. Join me in raising awareness and making smarter choices for a cleaner future. Let’s ditch the plastic bags and show some love to our planet today and every day. 🌱💚 #PlasticBagFreeDay #ReducePlasticWaste #SaveOurPlanet #ProtectOurPlanet #PlasticFreeDay #SustainableLiving #JoinTheMovement

Here's why it matters: Say no to disposable plastic water bottles! Instead, carry a reusable water bottle with you. Stainless steel or glass bottles are fantastic options, as they are long-lasting, free from harmful chemicals, and fully recyclable. By using a reusable water bottle, you're reducing plastic waste and helping to minimize the environmental impact of single-use bottles. It's a small but significant step towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Whether it's for school, work, or on-the-go, a reusable water bottle is your trusted companion. #EcoFriendlyLunches #SustainableHydration #ReuseRevolution

Throwback to an innovation I was lucky enough to work on which I believe inspired real change. We're talking Ecover Ocean Plastic. The brainchild of the excellent Tom Domen, the first limited edition was brought to market back in 2012. 🐟 The Issue: North Sea fishermen were literally hauling in plastic from the sea, and then throwing it back overboard as it was valueless. ♻️ The Solution: We collaborated with Waste Free Oceans to pay the fishermen to return the plastic catch to shore, where it was processed to make 'recycled ocean plastic'. Creating a demand stream for the waste. 💡 The Outcome: An iconic Limited Edition Washing Up 'Ocean Bottle' made using the plastic. A thing of beauty, it stood by your sink asking for its story to be told. This was Ecover Ocean Plastic 1.0 - the story evolved over the years and it became a strong part of the brand's thought leadership and led the fight against ocean plastic. In fact, I went to speak about ocean plastic at my nephew's school as part of their 'green days' project. Naturally, I had a lot to talk about with Ecover's Ocean Bottle, but the kids blew me away with their knowledge of the plastic issue, from the 'great pacific garbage patch' to their beach cleaning efforts with Surfers Against Sewage. The next generation are well versed in what needs to happen - it's on our generation to make the changes we need to end the plastic plight on our environment. Hands up who still has their Limited Edition Bottle? #oceanplastic #innovation
