One of the more depressing abstracts I have recently read: "The species composition and abundance of birds at Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Sarawak, was examined using mist-nets over 14 months during 2015–2016, and compared to results obtained by Fogden (1976), who mist-netted birds there over 14 months in 1964–1965. We mistnetted 55 species, including nine that were not recorded by Fogden, seven of which are common colonisers of anthropogenic habitats. In striking contrast, Fogden captured or observed 139 species, 93 (62.8%) of which were not recorded in our mist-netting study." See this paper: Dramatic loss of forest-dependent bird species from Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Sarawak, over 60 years by HANIS D.E. LIT, Mohd-Azlan Jayasilan & Richard Noske. In Journal of Asian Ornithology 39: 43-53. So, even where forest are protected, rarer forest species disappear, probably through a combination of catching for cage bird trade and ecological effects. Forest fragments are really important for species such as orangutans in human-dominated landscapes, but they 1) need to be really well managed and protected; 2) we may not be able to keep all species there.

Do sharks prey on birds? Yes, sharks do prey on birds. Some shark species, such as tiger sharks and bull sharks, are known to eat a variety of prey, including seabirds, shorebirds, and even terrestrial birds. Tiger sharks are particularly opportunistic feeders and have been known to eat just about anything, including birds. A study published in the journal Ecology in 2020 found that tiger sharks in the Gulf of Mexico regularly eat terrestrial songbirds. The study found that the sharks were targeting the songbirds as they migrated across the Gulf of Mexico. Other shark species that have been known to eat birds include: 1) Great white sharks 2) Bull sharks 3) Oceanic whitetip sharks 4) Mako sharks 5) Hammerhead sharks Sharks typically prey on birds that are swimming or diving in the water.
