I’ve been poor and I’ve felt rich. I’ve robbed a continental breakfast (sorry Best Western) and I’ve shared wine with high-ranking politicians. I’ve consulted with mining and IB brass on over 100 mining properties and royalty portfolios. I’ve been working with Newmont the past five years, and am looking to improve on their (already sound) operating model. I am a licensed geologist (P. Geo) with engineering and management experience aside. I’ve worked blue collar and white collar, and I’ve met lots of cool people along the way (who may feature in future issues). I’ve run investor relations booths and spoken on industry panels. I’ve used a dorm room sink to do laundry when I ran out of money for a coin operated washer. Sorry to say, the first issue won’t be details on the Newmont-Newcrest transaction. Though it may generate great interest, I would prefer to keep my job and reputation intact! As a communications professional, I have a bit of a beef. In our advice to our clients, we implore them to be open, transparent, and proactive in their communications when possible. This includes sharing information with the media who are such incredible megaphones in getting news out to the general public. But yesterday was an example of why clients are sometimes wary of proactively communicating. Here's why...and please read to the end... On August 10, New Gold shared a press release about their tailings storage facility and geotechnical variances discovered after regular inspections. News stories of course came out to share the insight but some news outlets decided to recount other mining disasters unrelated to New Gold that resulted from tailings facilities failing, dove into past leadership changes within New Gold, and other seemingly negative angles. On August 11, New Gold shared a press release confirming the structural integrity of their tailings storage facility. I'm looking at the news outlets who ran the original story on August 10 with unsavory coverage who have yet to pick up this new press release. Honourable news outlets that are worthwhile following provide a balanced and thoughtful approach to the news, staying away from the temptation of sensationalistic journalism, and we're so thankful for those outlets and their professionalism. So kudos to New Gold for doing the right thing and leading by example with proactive communications, even when it's really, really hard. https://lnkd.in/gnAJDaux

What content connects best with investors? We work for a number of listed companies that need to inform shareholders and potential investors about the business. Of course these investors will be looking at the numbers in the regular financial updates, but the social media posts that see the most interactions rarely have figures in them. In fact they are very simple. What we find connects most are videos showing the company at work. Okay, I’ll admit the companies we work for tend to have interesting things to film. For example Great Southern Copper who are looking for copper and lithium in Chile. A recent video update showing them drilling had good viewing figures. Why? I think investors like to see where the money is going. It’s a bit like making a big budget Hollywood film - you want to see the money on screen. Staying with video, CEO updates always do well.
