Sime Darby Plantation is giving new life to a 400-hectare peatland in Sarawak We're excited to share that we're restoring a huge area of peatland in Sarawak, East Malaysia. This is a big step forward in our efforts to be more sustainable and produce palm oil responsibly. Instead of planting oil palm trees again, we're bringing the peatland back to its natural state. This is in line with our promise to not cut down forests, not use peatland, and not exploit people. We also want to reach net-zero emissions across our entire business by 2050. The first part of this restoration project will start in January 2024. We'll focus on a 50-hectare area in our Lavang Estate. Over the next year, we'll plant 30,000 seedlings to help the peatland come back to life. We're grateful for the help of the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS), who are giving us seedlings and sharing their expertise. Their support is crucial as we work to restore the balance of nature in this area. This project in Lavang Estate is an important part of our bigger peatland restoration plan, which is being co-funded by the Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF). We’re excited to share news of our first investment for our Tropical Asia Forest Fund 2 (TAFF2) in a 70,715 hectare peatland area in Thailand called Kuan Kreng Landscape (KKL) which holds the country’s second largest peat swamp forest. Two thirds of the KKL peat swamp forest is degraded due to drainage canal networks which lowers water tables and causes GHG emissions. New Forests will work with local government and community groups to restore the degraded peatland by constructing canal blocks, undertake revegetation and enrichment planting, and develop a fire management program. Another important role we will play is in designing and developing a carbon project, with approximately 40% of the KKL landscape suitable for a carbon project. https://lnkd.in/gHKGYUfE #naturebasedsolutions #impact #restoration

In addressing water challenges in Bali, Kopernik is supporting the Bali Watershed Management Coordination Forum (FORDAS Bali) to coordinate water preservation efforts among various stakeholders, aiming for integrated watershed management on the island. This initiative targets critical lands in the midstream to upstream areas of the Ayung watershed, one of Bali's major water sources spanning five regencies and one city. These areas are often compromised due to factors such as excessive groundwater extraction, reduced water reserves, and water and soil contamination. To sustain these efforts, we have implemented a Payment For Environmental Services (PES) system, compensating individuals or organizations for the environmental services they provide. 🌾 Safeguarding peatlands that protect the air we breathe! Royale Green supports the Katingan Restoration and Conservation Project, an initiative in Indonesia to preserve natural wetlands that keep excess carbon from being released.    🏞️ 36% of Indonesia is covered in tropical peatlands. These swampy habitats can store about 20 times more carbon than all other vegetation types, making them valuable assets in capturing harmful greenhouse gases. However, from 2000-2015, the country lost an average of 498,000 hectares of the habitats (about 40 Disney Worlds) to make room for plantation crops, resulting in the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.    🛰️ The project uses satellite monitoring and fire management to protect the peatlands from deforestation and forest fires. In addition, the rich biodiversity like the vulnerable Bornean orangutan, can continue to thrive. The The World Bank has launched the Indonesia Coral Bond, a groundbreaking outcome impact bond to enhance the management and biodiversity of Indonesia's coral reefs. This innovative financial instrument will support key Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Raja Ampat, Alor, and the Savu Sea. 🔹 Goals: Improve coral reef health and management practices. 🔹 Collaboration: Developed with the Government of Indonesia, IUCN, GEF, and BNP Paribas. 🔹 Leverage: Builds on existing investments, including a $200M loan from the World Bank. Join me in welcoming Wren's newest project—Mangrove Planting in Myanmar— led by Worldview International Foundation. Adding this initiative to our Wren Classic portfolio feels like an achievement many years in the making. Early in my career while working with RECOFTC, I had the opportunity to visit community forests in Southeast Asia and see firsthand how Local People and Indigenous Communities collaborate to manage environments sustainably. Since then, I’ve had my eye out for high-quality community forest projects. This initiative from Worldview International Foundation caught my eye. It is particularly impressive— actively restoring mangrove ecosystems in the Ayeyarwady Delta to sequester CO₂, preserve marine habitats, and build local climate resilience. It has strong community co-benefits—a topic I’m deeply passionate about. To nurture a successful carbon project, it is essential to work directly with Local People and Indigenous Communities to design and manage project activities. This initiative does just that, enhancing the livelihoods of Local People while achieving high tree survival rates to ensure the carbon sequestered stays in the ground and out of the atmosphere. The integrity of Worldview International Foundation is apparent in its reputation. We leveraged insight from BeZero Carbon to assess the quality of this initiative. Their team awarded this project with an AA rating—the highest rating ever awarded by BeZero. I can’t wait to see what this project achieves with the support of Wren and our members. LATEST: Wovoka's Philippine restoration project is making significant strides! 👏 💯 Wovoka's carbon development team is currently in Camarines Norte, Philippines, engaging in fruitful discussions with regional government agencies and solidifying partnerships with our esteemed People's Organizations (POs). Our on-site activities during this visit are crucial. Wovoka is taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth execution of the next phase of the project as we draw closer to finalizing the feasibility study. ✅ On Day 1, the team had a productive meeting with the Regional DENR Conservation and Development Division for the renewal of the tenurial instrument which secures a 25-year lease of the land for the POs. This instrument safeguards the rights of the POs to actively participate in decision-making regarding land use and access to the socio-economic benefits derived from the carbon project and forest resources. ✅ In the coming days, we will hold knowledge-sharing sessions on carbon credits, ecological restoration, and other topics.
