Interesting read on nonprofit hospitals and look forward to discussing how tax-exempt hospitals can navigate through these issues and best position themselves at the American Health Law Association Tax Issues for Health Care Organizations program in September.

There are several main drivers to why "Hospital at Home" is being adopted; improved clinical outcomes and cost savings that fuel growth. There are many more specifics but this listing from Beckers on the expense of Inpatient Days should be concern for the sustainability of doing things as we always have. According to the American Hospital Association, by April 2024, CMS had authorized more than 320 hospitals across 133 health systems in 37 states to offer acute hospital care at home, and those numbers are climbing. A Chilmark Research report from May 2023 projects the program will double by 2026 — if Congress extends the CMS waiver initiative. #hospitalathome #clinicaldata #healthcare #healthsystem #healthtech #digitalhealth #clinicaloutcomes #innovation #healthcareinnovation

Excerpt: Does living near a hospital make you more likely to get the health care you need? Even though the federal government requires nonprofit hospitals to regularly assess the health needs of their surrounding communities and publicly post a plan to address those concerns, many people living nearby struggle to get basic health care. We are a political scientist and an urban sociologist who study how hospitals interact with and shape the communities in which they are located. As we explain in our book, “The City and the Hospital,” most top-ranked hospitals in the U.S. aren’t doing enough in this regard.
Nonprofit hospitals have an obligation to help their communities, but the people who live nearby may see little benefit

Do you wish that you could cut the Peterborough Regional Health Centre a big cheque but lack the funds to cut even a medium cheque? Same here. But you know what you can donate that's just as valuable? If you said "your time, volunteering" you're right, and you've clearly followed us long enough. The PRHC actively needs volunteers for certain jobs around the hospital. Are you good at giving directions? Being a way-finder or working at the information desk helps patients and visitors know where they need to go. If you're more a retail genius, the gift shop also needs volunteers to keep the shelves stocked and help patients or their families purchase essential stay items that may have been forgotten, especially in an emergency. There are also some pretty cool gifts, for those staying and those being released. There is also a call for Outpatient Services assistants. There's a wide variety of departments you could be working in to help people who are there for simple procedures that don't require a stay. Some of it includes escorting patients to their rides, or giving instructions for pre- or post-care. The other place you can volunteer is with Inpatient Services. You'll be helping staff with tasks and activities for those who are staying for a while. These are just the positions that PRHC has posted with us. There are more. Many, many more. They are mostly one shift a week and require references and a separate application form. The hospital is accessible by several transit routes. Get in touch today to help people get through some of the best, worst, most stressful, and most joyful times of their lives. You know what we mean, because you've been there, too. https://buff.ly/3RvWZZ4 #TryItTuesday #Healthcare #VolunteersNeeded #StudentHours #ResumeBuilding

A really interesting read on the set up and purpose of integrated care systems.
There are 42 integrated care systems across England, covering populations of around 500,000 to 3 million people. But why are they needed, and how do they work? Read our ICS explainer to find out.

Meet Whitney Plunkett, HCCI’s new Development Director. In this role, she supports HCCI’s mission of increasing access to home-based primary care by fostering donor relationships and exploring new funding opportunities. Most recently, Plunkett served as Director of Development at the American Heart Association, where she directed the organization’s giving program and worked to cultivate partnerships with individual donors and organizations at the local level. Like many Americans, Plunkett’s family recently faced the tough task of finding home-based care for a loved one. That is why HCCI’s mission especially resonates with her. “Many times, people don’t think about house call programs or in-home care until they are confronted with an emergency, which is what happened with my family,” Plunkett said. “From the caregiver lens, we were quickly thrown into a situation that required us to learn about home-based care, especially primary care options, when it had not previously been a consideration. During this time, it was apparent that not only is there a need for more house call programs nationally, but there are also disparities in the access to quality healthcare, which is something I had worked with in my previous role.” When asked why HCCI’s mission should matter to donors, she answered, “It is likely that each person will be faced with deciding how they or a loved one prefer to be cared for as they age or experience a chronic condition requiring them to be homebound. Instead of it being an afterthought, we can, instead, continue to proactively grow house call programs nationally and allow individuals to receive high-quality care in a manner that supports them.” #housecalls #healthcare #homecare #homebasedprimarycare
