My first and the only trophy I was awarded yet! In the early days of my corporate gifting journey, I was taught that gifts like trophies, momentos belong to file no 13, which is a slang for a trash bin. However, after curating hundreds of trophies for my clients and their teams, realised how different the idealogy and practicalities are. I have literally participated in every competition I could, done every possible thing I could, just to get these shiny glittery gold on my desk, but could just get one in my entire life yet. I think when a little school going girl values such pieces of recognition, why are trophies becoming less significant in these times?? What would you prefer? Black business owners overwhelmingly requested access to funding, with 81 percent of respondents to our survey reporting that they need less than $100,000 to stay in business. Part of this means continuing the call for rent relief, tax deferrals, and tax waivers to help black businesses thrive vs merely survive!

So, you know how you attend a conference, gain lots of insight and new information, and leave with all the best intentions to actually do something with that information?? Then, you go back home to your regular life, get back into your busy routine, and none of those new insights ever see the light of day. We wanted to try something different this year to see if we could interrupt this loop for those that attended our Black Woman Leading LIVE! Conference two weeks ago. On the last day of the conference, I facilitated an action planning session where attendees identified one action item to implement based on their insights gained at the event. We scheduled a post-event community call two weeks after the event for accountability and support around that action item and told them that we would check in about their action item on the call. Well, that call was tonight! About 30% of our attendees came (approx 40 people), and they came ready to report their progress! The intentionality made a difference! They celebrated each other. and it gave them a moment to re-connect and get re-energized to sustain their momentum from the event. I think we'll keep this post-event call for future eventsand aim to increase the participation. It was such an engaging and encouraging vibe on the call! Mission accomplished! #bwllive

Discrimination comes in different forms and sometimes it's embedded into a company's culture so much that it becomes second nature. After years of hard work to prove that there was a demand for a product like LS Cream and after multiple medals and accolades, we finally submitted to be listed at the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). This is the answer we got: "The respective Category Manager has evaluated your submission along with other competitive applications submitted. After careful consideration it has not been selected to proceed to the next step. Thank you for having submitted this product for our consideration." I want to be clear, no samples of LS Cream was sent to be evaluated on the quality or taste of the product, this was the first step that you need to pass to be able to know when and where to send sample bottles. My agency replied by asking them for the criterias that make them able to choose one brand over another and, after almost three weeks, we have yet to get a response. What I want everyone to understand is the feeling of powerlessness that comes over you when you have countless people reaching out to you because they want to support you by buying your product in Ontario, but there's is no pathway to sell it to them! You can't sell it online, you can't sell it at the grocery store, you simply cannot sell alcohol in the province until the gate keepers open the doors for you. But wait there's more! Here's what you will find on their website: "In 2021, the LCBO signed the BlackNorth Initiative CEO Pledge to support their mission to end anti-Black systemic racism and create targets aimed to create opportunities for the Black community." Now, ultimately, what this means is that their giving money to an organization that will help people of color get more opportunities to get high level jobs. That's great. But shouldn't they also help by giving black-owned brands a hand to shine throughout their retail network? Anyways, if you know me, you know this just gets me pumped and hyped. I'm asking everyone to help us by writing to the LCBO👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/eCDTH8UT 👈🏾 and tell them that you want LS Cream on the shelves. Let me remind you, LS Cream is the 2023 recipient of Best in Category award at the Tales of the cocktail in New Orleans or the 2022 Double Gold Winner at the New York Wine and Spirit International Competition. We simply want a chance to prove ourselves in the market and get the same opportunities that the big agencies get. Even if we bottle LS Cream in the USA, our team is Canadian and our head office is here. Our brand deserves a shot regardless of the size of the agency (which is also happen to be black-owned) that represents us. Thank you for reading and helping us get fair treatment in this industry.

I had the privilege of joining some of the brightest minds Sysco Canada Inc. for a Black History Month celebration that truly stood out. Sysco Canada Inc. didn't just host an event; they created a vibrant, safe space for meaningful dialogue on advancing inclusivity and diversity. Their approach was noteworthy, not only for the recognition of challenges but more so for their commitment to ongoing action. They laid out a clear strategy and set measurable goals, showcasing a genuine commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of Black and racialized communities. This initiative serves as a shining example of how continuous, collective efforts and accountability can lead to significant progress. By valuing and acting upon diverse voices, we move closer to a world where everyone is empowered to thrive. This commitment from Sysco Canada should inspire others to take similar steps, turning isolated gestures into a consistent, united pursuit of justice and equality. Juneteenth is a time for reflection at OFRF. As an organization, the staff and board of OFRF have been focusing on both the internal and external work needed for us to move toward becoming an anti-racist organization. Over the past few years we have made some changes that reflect this initiative, including: reserving half of our research grant funding for BIPOC applicants, taking steps to diversify our staff and board, and building relationships with BIPOC-led organizations, but we know that is not enough.
