This Fall, I had the opportunity to work alongside the Manufacturing Technology (MT) team here at Dayton DuPont Electronic Polymers (DEP). I was tasked with various responsibilities at site and learned essential skills. As my Co-Op rotation here at the Dayton DEP site comes to an end, I wanted to recap the experience.
During my term, I integrated myself in multiple projects and day-to-day activities around site. The first major project I completed was a heat exchanger cleaning alongside maintenance workers and my MIQA leader. Throughout this procedure, I learned the importance of problem solving and working as a team. This project was very hands-on, and I gained technical knowledge that couldn’t be learned behind the office desk. I conducted a Lock Out Tag Out (LTCT) procedure to ensure the safety of our maintenance workers and nullify the chance of any loss of containment. This required me to learn how to properly read P & IDs and helped me further down in the term as I redlined multiple P & IDs for revision. This project was a major success as the site plans to run the cleaning again and has plans to implement the procedure I created as Preventative Maintenance (PM). A few other projects I worked on included trials, Flexhose replacements, and Process Technology (PT) review. The two trials I ran were for specific products that process improvements were being assessed on. By collaborating with other engineers, I ran these procedures alongside operations and lab technicians to ensure the trial was completed safely and efficiently. Next, I completed an MOC-T to put through a flexhose replacement on site. With the coordination of maintenance, outdated flexhoses were replaced and tracked in the system for future PMs. Lastly, I assisted engineers in a PT review for one of our products. This was an ongoing task throughout my rotation; throughout that time I completed Relief Device Audits, Service-to-Process Interconnections, and updated numerous P & IDs. Time management and workload prioritization was something that I had to become adept to quickly as I had ongoing projects as described above.
I am appreciative of all the knowledge I have gained at Dayton DEP and will apply everything to future Co-Op rotations and full-time jobs. My plans are to return to classes in the Spring semester and use my experience as a full-time Co-Op towards classes. Next Fall, I plan to work another Co-Op with the possibility of starting it this Summer for a double term rotation. Thanks to the DuPont Dayton site, especially the MT Team, for giving me this opportunity!
