By 2050, the United Nations estimates more than two-thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas. With this rapid increase in urbanization comes a pressing need to move #people through cities as efficiently as possible & to develop automated, connected systems to do so. Public #transportation has already begun embracing new #payments #innovations to #change the way we buy products & use services. Tap-&-go transit payments are becoming common in cities worldwide. Earlier this year, the Netherlands became the first country to tap to ride anywhere in the country — on trains, trams & buses. Last year, Helsinki debuted the first tap-&-ride e-bikes. Meanwhile, the explosive #growth of ride-hail & micromobility has created more safe & reliable last-mile options for riders. Privately-owned vehicles will be the next frontier, particularly at the nexus of transportation & #digital payments. When payments & mobility are cohesive, drivers enjoy more choice & convenience, while city authorities & operators are able to manage congestion, increase efficiencies & expand public transportation ridership. The acceleration of #digitization, the #InternetofThings & — to a lesser extent— #autonomous driving are paving the way for this to happen. For starters, the adoption of #5G, the next generation of #wireless #connectivity, is exploding, with connections expected in nearly 80 countries by the end of 2023 & penetration forecast to exceed 1.1 billion connections worldwide. This explains why your phone can now talk to your dishwasher & your washing machine. Similarly, the autonomous driving #market is estimated to reach $300 billion to $400 billion in #value by 2035. Though there aren’t fully autonomous #vehicles on the road yet, #automakers have been integrating these capabilities into existing features such as advanced driver assistance systems. As a result of these advancements, 95% of vehicles sold globally will be connected by 2030. And, in the very near #future, connected vehicles could transform how we make payments, offering a quick, easy & safe way for drivers to pay for gas & tolls, charge their electric vehicles, more efficiently navigate cities from their dashboards & access a range of #online & offline services without ever leaving their vehicles. These advancements in in-car payments could be a game changer. The market is moving in the right direction, but we believe strategic partnerships – collaborations that flow between manufacturers, fintechs, merchants, banks & governments — can accelerate this shift & make seamless in-car payments & frictionless urban #mobility a reality much sooner than we could have imagined. #AI #analytics #bestadvice #businessintelligence #cloudcomputing #computing #data #datascience #ecommerce #economics #executivesandmanagement #finance #finances #fintech #infrastructure #investing #job #jobs #law #leadership #machinelearning #management #markets #ml #productivity #riskmanagement #strategy #tech

Ride-hailing firm Uber Technologies and mapping services provider HERE Technologies have announced a long-term collaboration at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) expo, held on 9–12 January in Las Vegas, Nevada (United States). Their collaboration aims at improving Uber’s mapping capabilities for ride-sharing and food delivery services globally, according to a company statement. In addition, Uber and HERE are exploring new ways to introduce additional location-based tools to expand the capabilities of the Uber platform. Ajay Dalvi, senior director of business development at Uber, said, “The mapping capability is key to creating a fast and intuitive experience for on-demand mobility and delivery solutions. Ultimately, it’s all about ensuring end-users, from drivers to couriers to consumers, have the best possible experience when they’re using the Uber apps. In a fast moving world, Uber’s partnership with HERE helps enable Uber to remain a leader in this space with heightened fresh and accurate data, and we’re excited to continue building with them.” Uber, which operates in more than 70 countries and 10,000 cities, said that it had clocked 2.4 billion trips globally in the third quarter of 2023, up by 25% year over year, driven by growth at both its mobility and delivery units. Uber’s partnership with HERE aims to provide safer and more accurate pickup and drop-off points in locations around the world, especially in high-traffic areas such as airports, stadiums, and arenas. Meanwhile, HERE provides its customers with navigation maps ranging from standard definition (SD) maps to advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) maps and high-definition (HD) maps. Last year, the company launched UniMap, which enables the automatic processing and creation of map data. The technology creates a uniform map and makes it possible to visualize any changes detected on the map within 24 hours and allows customers to combine and link data sets.
