My comments in the Financial Times today: In 2023, China produced 17.7mn internal combustion engine cars, a 37 per cent fall from its prior peak in 2017, according to data from Automobility Ltd, a Shanghai consultancy. Bill Russo, the former head of Chrysler in China and founder of advisory firm Automobility, said that the “precipitous decline” of internal combustion engine car sales means as much as half of the industry’s installed capacity — around 25mn units of 50mn units annual capacity — is not being used. #china #overcapacity #electricvehicles

Chinese automaker BYD is surging ahead in the electric vehicle (EV) market, leaving traditional German giants like Volkswagen, Mercedes, and BMW in the dust. Recent data reveals BYD's electric vehicle sales have skyrocketed, surpassing the combined sales of these legacy brands in the first half of 2023. BYD, which sold nearly 1.2 million plug-in electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids during this period, has set its sights on Europe. Between January and July 2023, BYD recorded overseas sales of 92,469 EVs, exceeding their total sales for all of 2022. The following chart, based on estimates from CleanTechnica, shows that BYD and Tesla have opened up a sizeable lead in the global EV market.

Volkswagen AG’s all-in on electric vehicles plan is no more as it will need more plug-in #hybrids as #EV sales decelerate. This marks just the latest adjustment VW has made to its #electrification strategy after the company botched several model releases and fell behind in #China, where local brands now dominate. The #manufacturer has also shelved efforts to seek outside investors for its #battery unit and scrapped plans for a €2 billion ($2.2 billion) #EV factory in #Germany. #EnergyTransition #Innovation #urbanmobility #futuremobility #electricvehicles #automotive https://lnkd.in/ga2wCqrE

““Based on what I see, I need more. If I had more capacity today, I could sell more [electric] cars.” Hyundai’s global leader said.” Hyundai disbanded R&D for combustion engines in late 2021. Now they’re furloughing their biggest ICE factory to build out more EV capacity. Hyundai has openly stated their intention to become one of the top 3 carmakers and they’re making it clear they’ll leverage their position selling EVs to do it. Right now, there are many comments online speculating that BYD will overtake Tesla this year. Will Hyundai take the 3rd spot? Will it be a Chinese make? Someone else? Would love to hear your opinion in the comments.

Hyundai is definitely on my short list for the next #EV I purchase. Why? - they are building an EV factory in my home state of Georgia Department of Economic Development - they sponsor Georgia Institute of Technology Football stadium - 800v architecture allows for faster charging at most #dcfc - they allow for #v2x - they are committed to an EV future - I like a lot of the styling exterior and interior (with exceptions on ioniq6)
Yet another reason why my next car may well be a Hyundai. GM, Ford et al have pissed on their own chips - Who wants to buy an EV from an automaker that's not committed to electrification?
