📣 Just out: new joint UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, IOM - UN Migration & MMC report on #MixedMigration routes through Africa towards Europe - based on 31,000 4Mi interviews with refugees & migrants by MMC & data from UNHCR & IOM - points to ongoing unacceptable & extreme violence towards people on the move. This report is a new iteration of a joint UNHCR and MMC report issued in 2020 covering the period 2018–2019. In the complex landscape of #migration, this second volume of the report 'On This Journey, No One Cares if You Live or Die' emerges as a crucial body of work that sheds light on the stark realities faced by #migrants traversing the perilous Central Mediterranean Route (CMR) all the way from East and Horn of Africa and West Africa to the North African coast of the #Mediterranean and across the sea. It aims to inform increased and concrete routes-based protection responses to reduce the suffering associated with the desperate journeys migrants undertake, and a call to action to address the root causes of displacement and drivers of irregular migration. Read the report in detail. ⬇️

Things look quite a bit different since the first-ever Global Refugee Forum (GRF) was convened in 2019 to assess progress towards meeting commitments under the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2018. The world has been rocked by vast displacement crises, political support towards refugees has cooled in some countries, and the GRF and GCR processes have been largely absent in the response to major displacement. With the upcoming GRF in Geneva in December, what are the stakes and what are the chances for effective outcomes? Our Susan Fratzke and the Robert Bosch Stiftung's Hannes Einsporn discuss in a new commentary. #refugees #humanitarianprotection #grf2023

Excited to share my essay on the complex landscape of global migration, refugee crises, and the evolving policies that shape our world. This research delves into historical perspectives, contemporary challenges, and offers insights into the urgent issues faced by migrants, particularly from Syria. The paper emphasizes the need for preventive measures, addressing root causes and protecting the rights of vulnerable populations. Susan Fratzke and Hannes Einsporn's article underscores the significance of refugee participation in policy decisions, especially during the 2023 Global Refugee Forum (GRF): “The lack of participation of refugees and their organisations in how policies are made and programs are designed and delivered is an important barrier to more effective, efficient, and legitimate solutions”. At Upinion, we're committed to breaking down barriers and ensuring refugee voices are integral to policy discussions and decision-making processes. Through our digital engagement platform, we consistently engage with more than 1000 individuals from both refugee and host communities in Lebanon and Türkiye, feeding their insights and perspectives directly into policy debates like the GRF 2023. Their active engagement is crucial for the much-needed transformation of the current global protection system, a point underscored by the experts of the Migration Policy Institute and Robert Bosch Stiftung in their recent commentary below.

We signed a joint statement along with almost 40 organisations to call on EU leaders to ambitiously expand safe pathways to Europe Here are the main demands from EU and member states: ➡ Step up resettlement efforts to achieve the objectives set in the Third Country Solutions Road Map 2030 to deliver the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) ➡Invest in preparedness when expressing the pledges for 2024 and 2025, and guarantee adequate capacity for emergency resettlement ➡Improve the implementation of resettlement commitments by streamlining resettlement procedures to support full implementation of committed places ➡Include the expertise of refugee communities in resettlement implementation ➡Adopt the Union Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission Framework ➡Invest in dignified reception systems to meet the immediate needs of arriving refugees with adequate services, and promote additional community-led solutions ➡Upheld the right to asylum for all protection seekers, regardless of how people arrive in Europe Read full statement here: https://bit.ly/3Z7qOlg

"Every #refugee is a #symptom of our collective failure to ensure #peace and #security." During the past 10 years the number of refugees has more than doubled from 16.7 million refugees in 2013 to 36.4 million by mid-2023. 📈 More than 114 million people worldwide have been forced to flee their homes by the end of September 2023. 💥 We must all #acttogether to address the root causes of displacement! 🙌 The #GlobalRefugeeForum is an incredible example of how individuals and entities, in both the public and private sectors, come together and support the practical implementation of the objectives set out in the #GlobalCompact on #Refugees. 🤝 The main objectives being those of: - Easing pressures on host countries - enhancing refugee self-reliance - increasing access to third-country solutions - improving conditions in countries of origin.

It was a pleasure for me to moderate the panel on collaborative #integration at this year's #EMN conference "#Resettlement, Humanitarian Admission and Complementary Pathways" in refugee protection. Together with Belen Zanzuchi from #MigrationPolicyInstitute, Andrea Pettrachin from the "#WholeCOMM" project and Tobias van Treeck from #IOM Finland, we discussed the following questions: * What contributions do the different actors make in connection with the integration of #resettlement refugees? * What are the main challenges and hurdles in establishing effective coordination policies and practices between the actors involved? * How can we strengthen cooperation between the actors and thus contribute to an improved and sustainable #integration of #resettlementrefugees? Answers to these questions can be found in the MPI report "Improving Stakeholder Coordination in Refugee Resettlement" (https://lnkd.in/dRkpv39v), on the website of the Whole Comm project (https://whole- comm.eu/) and IOM Finland (Navigator Project: https://lnkd.in/d2fbuNJV). A big thank you to Belen, Andrea and Tobias for their valuable contributions to our conference!

With surging global displacement and a cooling political environment towards #refugees and #migrants, particularly in high-income countries, the upcoming Global Refugee Forum in Geneva in December will need to get real to achieve results, the Migration Policy Institute writes. "The forum will need to go beyond a narrow focus on collecting pledges," the think-tank notes. "It must also tackle the thorny political questions that are eroding the global protection system and identify the opportunities and supports necessary to meet these challenges." Migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to face significant challenges around the world, as most recently underscored by news coverage of a tragic shipwreck off the coast of Libya. This International #MigrantsDay, we want to raise awareness of the challenges that people on the move face on their journeys, and how we as the IFRC network are there to respond and support them ensuring they are #NotAlone. The IFRC network is providing hope to migrants through its Global Route-Based Migration Programme. Humanitarian Service Points (HSPs) are safe spaces where migrants and displaced people can access reliable support from National Societies. Our commitment as IFRC is to undertake all possible efforts to increase the number of HSPs, to bring them from hundreds to thousands, in order to continue providing assistance and enhancing protection services to those in need.
