#Militarized #governance of #migration in the #Mediterranean By Muge Kinacioglu Oxford University Press on behalf of The Royal Institute of International Affairs. This article focuses on the increasing use of military actors in the governance of migration in the Mediterranean basin. The article analyses maritime migration as distinct from migration via other routes. It investigates the understudied features of the #securitization processes of maritime migration and discusses their repercussions for #migrants' rights. To this end, building on critical security perspectives and inspired by critical geopolitics, the article conducts a textual and discourse analysis of #nato and the #europeanunion’s security assessments and strategies, and examines the practices ensuing from these organizations' security narrative. The article's main arguments are two-fold: first, it contends that framing migration as a ‘hybrid threat’ by NATO and the EU expands the spaces of containment of human mobility at the expense of migrants' protection and rights; and second, it argues that such a ‘threat discourse’ simultaneously provides legitimacy for military operations and eliminates accountability for infringement of the human rights of migrants and refugees. The article ends with a summary of the analysis and the subsequent conclusions, as well as suggestions for overturning the current trends of dehumanization of migrants and law-breaking in the name of security in the Mediterranean. 📣Dear Friends! We are happy to share the new Prague Process Policy Brief ‘Forced Migration from Ukraine: migration scenarios 2.0’ authored by Dr Franck Duvell. This Policy brief considers the displacement and forced migration inside and outside Ukraine’s international border, the dynamics of these movements, the individuals’ aspirations and the possible future developments in migration trends while reassessing scenarios developed in 2022. The analysis delves into the complexities of the displaced population's intentions, highlighting that a significant proportion, possibly up to 2.76 million individuals, may not consider returning in the foreseeable future. As of January 2024, 6.5 million Ukrainians seek shelter abroad, with 4.2 million in the EU (possibly fewer) and around 5 million remaining internally displaced, totalling 10.5 million. Within Ukraine, 17.6 million people require humanitarian assistance, even though the economy is slowly recovering. #GENDERSPECIFICS #MIGRATION #MIGRATION #MILITARYCONFLICT "STUDY OF GENDER SPECIFICS OF FORCED MIGRATION FROM UKRAINE TO THE EU IN THE MILITARY CONFLICT" ✅ The study of gender specifics of forced migration from Ukraine to the EU in the military conflict was made within the Ukraine Civil Society Sectoral Support Activity, implemented by ISAR "Ednannia" in consortium with the Ukrainian Center for Independent Political Research (UCIPR) and the Centre for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM) with the support of the United States Agency For International Development (USAID). The purpose of the project is to improve the operating environment for civil society and strengthen the institutional capacities of civil society organisations in order to advance the self-reliance of the civic sector in Ukraine. 🔎 The context of the proposed research is that at present, the causes of forced migration are increasingly associated with international and internal armed conflicts that cause massive and often unorganised departure of people. There is a rapid increase in the number of displaced persons, both internal and cross-border, triggered by russian large-scale aggression and the spread of hostilities across Ukraine’s vast territories. Moreover, the fast intensification of Ukraine population’s international mobility is taking place amidst globalisation and the growing intensity of global migration, which raises the urgent problem of regulating migration processes, making them organized, safe and non-conflictual. 📑 The analysis of current migration trends in Ukraine, in the context of i ts participation in the European and global migration, is one of the important factors in shaping national policy. This problem is linked, both directly and indirectly, with the national security of Ukraine. The main purpose of the study is to identify the problems, ways, formats, means of integration and prospects for the return of Ukrainian forced migrants based on the analysis of specifics of the new migration wave, which has a pronounced gender bias, and thereupon to assess the potential of Ukraine’s post-war recovery. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d-JY7552
