Greece is one of the primary entry points to the EU for migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Thessaloniki, the capital of the Region of Central Macedonia in northern Greece, experienced a significant change in its migration landscape after 2015 due to increased refugee arrivals towards Europe. Being at the eastern edge of Europe, Greece serves as a transit country for many migrants and refugees aiming to reach countries further west. In 2021, according to ELSTAT, the migrant population in Greece was 7.3% of the total population while the 2011 census indicated that the foreign population living in the Regional Unit of Thessaloniki was 6.3% of the total population. Like many other cities in Southern Europe, Thessaloniki shares critical elements in its housing condition: the existing housing systems encourage home ownership rather than renting and have a limited public and social housing sector, and in the case of Greece none. This increases the dependence of vulnerable populations, such as people with a migratory background, on the private housing market, and particularly rental, impacting their effective inclusion and integration into the city. At Come HoMe, we have conducted research and collected data to understand the housing access challenges faced by individuals with a migratory background. Our focus has been on their experiences with housing discrimination and identifying other obstacles they encounter when seeking a home.
