🔍 Did you know? People awaiting asylum decisions in the UK face significant financial hardship. 📉 They receive just £7 per day under Section 95 support. This amount is meant to cover all essentials - food, clothing, transport - but is far from sufficient. 🚫 Without the right to work, they rely solely on this support, often leading to skipped meals, poor nutrition, and social isolation. 🏥 Access to public services like healthcare is also a challenge, compounded by digital exclusion and language barriers. 🏠 Recent policy changes have further increased the risk of homelessness among refugees. 🙌 We at the Refugee Council are advocating for: - Support for integration through a National Refugee Strategy. - Extension of the move-on period to 56 days. - The right to work for asylum seekers. Imagine fleeing your home in search of safety, escaping war and persecution, only to be met with more added trauma. Across the UK, our caseworkers are having to hand out sleeping bags and tents to people who’ve recently been granted refugee status but now face life on the streets.     When people seeking asylum receive their refugee status, the Home Office allows them just 28 days to move on – to find accommodation, mainstream benefits, or employment. It's simply not enough time. Some people have had only 7 days notice to find new accommodation   The mental health impact of this is shocking. For people going through the asylum system, this next step is deeply demoralising. The government needs to do more to support refugees. World Refugee Day is a powerful reminder of the resilience and courage of millions of people around the globe. Reflecting on this, I never imagined that I would one day become an asylum seeker and refugee myself, though I worked closely with internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the past. I was much more familiar with the terms IDPs than asylum seeker and refugee. Anyway, what really matters in this whole process and journey are the people—their humanity, their support, and their advocacy. Don’t underestimate your small act of support, your voice of advocacy and every kind word can change someone’s life. Nothing is more important than being kind and supportive to those who need it, it makes our life meaningful. Be present. Be the voice of change. Be the advocate. Stand out. Be different. Lead with compassion.

More ACF Evidence Capacity Support backlog! As a part of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Evidence Capacity Support project, OPRE worked with colleagues in ORR to better understand the types of financial matching approaches and partnerships used in the Office of Refugee Resettlement Matching Grant (MG) Program. The Evidence Capacity Support project team reviewed MG Program reporting documents provided by ORR and interviewed staff from resettlement agencies and their local affiliates. Collecting this information systematically, and sharing among resettlement agencies highlights common challenges and approaches that can help improve local program administration. Kudos to ACF colleagues Lauren N. Griffin, Anastasia Brown, and Tom Giossi for their hard work on this project. It also summarizes challenges and lessons learned from grant recipients. MG grant recipients and other refugee-serving organizations can use these lessons to secure matching funds and build and maintain successful partnerships.
