Do people exposed to conflict and violence mostly aspire to migrate? Jessica Hagen-Zanker, Marta Bivand Erdale, and I explore this question using survey and qualitative #MIGNEX data of young adults (18-39) from eleven communities across Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Somalia. We explore under what conditions young adults consider staying or migrating either internationally or internally in the face of fearing, perceiving or experiencing violence and conflict. In this short video, we share the study's key takeaways. You can also access the complete findings in our open access article in the Journal of Refugee Studies here 👇: https://lnkd.in/exh3s_xx ODI Humanitarian Policy Group

We are excited to announce the completion of our latest project with Samuel Hall in #SouthSudan! 🌍 🚀 Together, we’ve conducted community-based data assessments across 4 regions in South Sudan. These regions were designated by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency as areas of relative stability where sustainable reintegration of returnees might be possible. Since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in 2018, over 507,000 people have returned home. Recognizing the critical need for comprehensive data in these areas, Space4Good researched, retrieved and conducted a quality check on the currently freely available datasets and #geospatial indicators related to various factors such as environment, infrastructure, and economic opportunities to support #reintegration efforts, and investigated the data gaps. These datasets and discovered #data gaps will be the basis for further in-country research and community profiling. This initiative aligns with one of our Space4Good goals of facilitating #peace and resilience in conflict-affected regions.

How can we mobilize political will for more comprehensive and inclusive development responses to forced displacement? This development policy paper written by UNU-CPR's Heaven Crawley in collaboration with OECD - OCDE and OECD Development reviews case studies of Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ecuador, Iraq and Lebanon to examine the role of political will in shaping development responses to forced displacement in low- and middle-income countries, where more than 70% of refugees and internally displaced persons live. The paper then proposes a conceptual model for mobilizing political will to facilitate sustainable development support in contexts of forced displacement. In the Cross-Border Conflict: Evidence, Policy, and Trends (XCEPT) program, we prioritize the voices of affected communities to understand conflict impacts. That's why our local research is firmly rooted in community-driven approaches, ensuring insights come directly from those with first-hand experiences. This paper summarizes the methodologies and approaches developed and the lessons that have surfaced from working with Rohingya populations living in refugee camps in Bangladesh. Somalia integration in the East African Community threatened by internal conflicts and insecurity: #Somalia accession to the East African Community has become recently a hot topic. A policy note issued by the Economic Research Policy Centre (ERPC), a Ugandan think-tank, questions the ability of Somalia to integrate economically and politically within such Regional Economic Community because of the persisting conflicts and insecurity in the country, that in the latest years have produced spillover insurgencies straining regional relations and resulting in a refugee crisis across regional #borders. ➡️More on Sudan this week: We have a new working paper - Local Perceptions and Experiences of Smuggling and Human Trafficking in Sudan. 🌍Fostered by uncontrollable borders, and the political and economic factors at play in the area, Sudan has become a source of migration, human smuggling, and trafficking to Libya and transit to Europe. Migrants are being smuggled through the Northern State and North Darfur, especially women and children, and are being exposed to different types of human trafficking. ⏺️The study explores this through extensive qualitative research - interviewing stakeholders from government authorities to smugglers and victims of human trafficking. The paper comes from the SNAC project - a Sudanese-Norwegian academic collaboration with the University of Khartoum and the University of Bergen. 📰Read the full paper here 🔗https://lnkd.in/eDEqpi-4 #humantrafficking #migration #Sudan #africa #libya #politics #research
