Global Energy Storage (GES) and Provaris Energy have agreed to develop a hydrogen import facility at the Port of Rotterdam, capable of importing compressed gaseous hydrogen and refrigerated ammonia, with flexible redelivery options via barges, rail, and trucks. The significance of this venture extends beyond mere infrastructure. By tapping into Rotterdam's strategic location, the facility will seamlessly integrate with the HyNetwork (H2 grid) operated by Gasunie, facilitating the distribution of hydrogen across Europe. The joint efforts will include in-depth studies covering various aspects such as jetty facilities, storage, grid connection, safety protocols, and environmental considerations to evaluate the economic viability and unloading of compressed hydrogen carriers. Provaris Energy's innovative compressed hydrogen supply chain will offer a first mover, providing a competitive alternative to traditional chemical carriers from regional supply sources in the Nordic regions that can extend across the Baltics, North Sea, Iberia and North Africa. Carbon’s substitute, Japan’s green ammonia initiative. Japan has a bright vision for renewable energy but not all sectors have a clear strategy to support such vision. Coal is a common source of energy for multiple power plants. Now with the support of corporations and introduction of ammonia to power plants, thermal energy players have an avenue to push forward to reach the carbon neutrality goal. -Sojitz and Kyushu Electric signed term sheets with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen to supply 200,000 tons/ year of green ammonia to each of the Japanese parties.  -They will sign contracts following reviews. -The ammonia will be produced in India. On January 18th, several departments of Hainan Province jointly issued the "Hainan Province Medium and Long-term Plan for #hydrogen Energy Industry Development (2023-2035)", proposing that by 2025, the number of #fuelcell vehicles will reach around 200, with the deployment of 6 hydrogen refueling stations, and the capacity for #renewableenergy hydrogen production will reach 100,000 tons per year.  🚢 This hydrogen will primarily be used for the production of #greenmethanol for ships, to meet the needs of 2-3 methanol-powered container ships, achieving a reduction of 1 million tons of CO2 emissions annually through the demonstration of #greenhydrogen industrial parks. A collaboration between #INEEL and #ITSON , we explored decarbonizing Mexican refineries through green hydrogen. Our key findings: LCOH for Salamanca and Istmo refineries is $2-$3 USD/kg by 2040. With a grid-interconnected P2G system, LCOH drops to $0.8 USD/kg in Salina Cruz. ✨✨Renewable Energy Market Insights: Mitsui, IHI Corporation (IHI) and The Kansai Electric Power Co., (Kansai) have signed a joint study to establish a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain in Osaka. The companies will study the development of bases for receiving, storing and supplying ammonia in the Osaka coastal industrial zone, and conduct surveys to expand the use of ammonia in the Kansai and Setouchi regions. Germany’s chemical producer BASF has secured the approval of funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate to build a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer which is expected to produce up to 8,000 metric tons of hydrogen per year. With an output of 54 MW, the PEM electrolyzer will be one of the largest of its kind in Germany once it is operational, BASF said, explaining that the approval of the funding marks a major step closer to building the electrolyzer. Powered by electricity from renewable energy sources, the system will produce CO2-free hydrogen and thereby reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the site by up to 72,000 metric tons annually. BASF and Siemens Energy plan to begin operating the water electrolysis plant in 2025. In cooperation with the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the BMWK is contributing up to €124.3 million to the project – up to €37.3 million of which will be financed by the government of Rhineland-Palatinate. Melanie Maas-Brunner, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE and Site Director Ludwigshafen, said: “In today’s chemical industry, our main need for low-carbon hydrogen is as a raw material. In the long term, it will also become increasingly important for BASF as an energy vector. That is why I am particularly pleased that our politicians have recognized the project’s potential. The coming years of this decade will play a vital role in establishing the dominance of green hydrogen, as the competition is in full swing. While the EU is currently at the forefront, China is striving to solidify its position by focusing on cost competitiveness. Recently disclosed procurement data indicates that domestically produced ALK electrolyzers are priced almost 75% lower than their Western counterparts.
