Norway's HydrogenPro delivered a 5.5 MW electrolyzer to Takasago, marking a significant milestone in hydrogen innovation. Japan's national hydrogen strategy, launched in 2017, supports the use of hydrogen fuel cells in homes and vehicles. Hydrogen continues to gain traction as a low-carbon energy source with major potential. Here’s one point of evidence: The European Commission aims to produce 10 million tons and import 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen in the European Union by 2030. Oil company ENEOS and trading house Sumitomo Corporation will produce "green" hydrogen in Malaysia and export much of it to Japan under plans announced Monday, hoping to further diversify the supply of the fuel essential for decarbonization. The two Japanese companies have signed an agreement with SEDC Energy, a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corp. set up by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. They will also consider establishing a special-purpose company with the Malaysian partner. Power from hydroelectric plants will be used to electrolyze water to produce the green hydrogen without emitting carbon dioxide. The aim is to produce 90,000 tonnes a year by 2030. The scale of investment will be finalized moving forward. Gentari, SEDC to launch JV for Malaysian hydrogen hub development. By Charlie Currie Petronas subsidiary Gentari and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) are set to launch a joint venture (JV) to develop a centralised hydrogen production hub in Sarawak, Malaysia. Under the Heads of Agreement (HoA), Gentari Hydrogen and SEDC Energy plan to develop large-scale hydrogen production capacity in Bintulu to serve as the “sole supplier” of green hydrogen for downstream facilities. To undertake the plans, Gentari and SEDC Energy plan to establish a JV company which will be responsible for optimising “all” hydrogen production projects within the region. Slated as one of the key green hydrogen production regions within Asia-Pacific (APAC), Sarawak has plans to be a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027. [Hydrogen Energy Supply Business in Japan: Key Research Findings 2023] Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has surveyed the hydrogen energy supply business in Japan and has found out the market trends, trends of leading market players, and future perspectives. Disclosed here is the forecast of hydrogen supply volume through FY2050 in Japan (including domestically produced and imported). Market Overview: Hydrogen can be produced from various resources such as water, biomass resources (sewage sludge, livestock excrement, etc.), and fossil resources without emitting CO2 when combustion. It is the energy that contributes to reducing CO2 emissions owing to energy, and to reinforcing energy security that safely supplies energy regardless of changes in politics, economy, or international situations. In Japan, hydrogen is positioned as the key technology to realize carbon neutrality in the industrial and transportation sectors, expanding the technological development and demonstration that lead to propelling the use of hydrogen and increasing the hydrogen supplies. There are attempts by municipalities to create a hydrogen energy production model that utilizes local resources, aiming to achieve local production and local consumption of energy and BCP (Business Continuity Planning) measures when a disaster occurs. Sumitomo, ENEOS, And SEDC Energy Unite For Clean Hydrogen Supply Chain In Malaysia Sumitomo Corporation, ENEOS Corporation, and SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd have officially inked a Joint Development Agreement for the establishment of a clean hydrogen supply chain in Malaysia. This collaborative effort aims to leverage renewable energy sources, particularly hydropower in Sarawak, to produce approximately 90,000 tons per year of clean hydrogen, with an additional 2,000 tons for local consumption in Sarawak. The process involves converting the produced hydrogen into MCH (methylcyclohexane), an efficient form of hydrogen transportation, for export to Japan.
