Today, GB's East Coast Hydrogen project delivery plan is set to revolutionize the way clean energy is generated and stored within the nation. The plan, recently published in Industrial News, suggests that the project will develop the concept of a distributed hydrogen energy network. This network will be utilized in both medium and large-scale operations across the country. The plan makes it possible for hydrogen to become a trusted source of clean energy. This is due to the construction of a robust energy grid which will allow for far more efficient energy storage and utilization. Furthermore, the plan seeks to maximize the potential of green hydrogen within the renewable energy industry. This includes the use of hydrogen in renewable energy portfolios, as well as an increase in hydrogen-fueled infrastructure. The potential that is unlocked with the implementation of the GB's East Coast Hydrogen project delivery plan is truly exciting. Hydrogen in Decarbonized Energy Systems is a new report from the Hydrogen Council and Baringa detailing the benefits of incorporating hydrogen in evolving energy systems. Key messages from the report: Hydrogen brings system benefits in addition to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors Resource-rich regions need to prioritize connecting renewable resources to demand centres via hydrogen pipelines Resource-poor regions need to focus on maximising the value of limited renewables available, and can use curtailed power to make hydrogen Islanded power systems need to pay extra attention to flexibility, which electrolyzers and hydrogen turbines can provide Renewable hydrogen production will add flexibility to energy systems and consequently reduce the cost to decarbonize Electrolyzers can respond to market prices to help alleviate supply-demand crunches in systems relying on high levels of intermittent wind and solar Hydrogen to power provides resilience against most challenging part of the year when renewable load is low and energy demand is high. It complements the role of batteries and CCS in doing so Network infrastructure and sensible market design rules are critical enablers for decarbonisation using hydrogen

‘Hydrogen in Decarbonized Energy Systems’ is the latest of a string of studies proving the importance of low-carbon hydrogen in truly reaching net zero by 2050. Put together by Hydrogen UK member Baringa, in conjunction with the Hydrogen Council, it models 3 distinct and contrasting energy systems (Japan, Texas, Central & Western Europe), all with varying degrees of flexibility needs; energy resource availability; supply-demand co-location; grid isolation; import/export profiles; and energy costs (including carbon pricing), in order to optimise their zero-carbon energy systems out to 2050. The study shows annual system benefits of $2.5bn in the case of Texas, improving up to ~$6bn in Japan and CWE; whilst in all 3 cases, hydrogen can provide: 📈 Supply-Demand Regulation ⚡ Power System Flexibility 💲 Energy Price Shock Resilience 🔛 Geographical Resource Linkage Hydrogen-to-power continues to prove critical as a means of complimenting increasing renewable energy and electrification. It provides flexible peaking electricity generation, especially in periods of prolonged renewable energy downturn, in cases where CCS-enabled power is uneconomical and short-duration energy storage with demand side response is inadequate. The study shows H2P providing ~10% of flexible capacity in CWE and Texas, which tops out at 57% in Japan.
