A leader’s ability to support, motivate and guide their team hinges on their distinctive leadership style and the influence it has on their team dynamic. While there are pros and cons to each of the most common leadership styles there are also situations in which one is more effective than the other. Knowing when to apply a particular style and the agility to adjust their approach as situations demand is what makes an exceptional leader. In Rebecca M. Knight's recent Harvard Business Review article she explores the six most common leadership styles, when they are most effective and how to adapt when different circumstances call for different approaches.

Research suggests that the most influential leaders adapt their style to different circumstances, be it a change in setting, a shift in organizational dynamics, or a turn in the business cycle. But what if you feel like you’re not equipped to take on a new and different leadership style, let alone more than one? In this article, the author outlines the six leadership styles Daniel Goleman introduced in his 2000 HBR article, “Leadership That Gets Results,” and explains when to use each one.

Glad to see this further codified. In her insightful exploration of leadership styles in HBR, Rebecca Knight, drawing on Daniel Goleman's work, outlines six distinct leadership approaches. From coercive to coaching, Knight and Goleman emphasize the importance of tailoring our leadership style to suit different situations—a philosophy I firmly advocate for. Adapting flexibly among these styles, as suggested, is crucial for nurturing team morale and driving productivity. I've personally found that the most effective leaders are those who skillfully modify their approach based on the team’s needs and the specific challenges they face, proving that dynamic leadership is key to organizational success. I've also seen a rigid approach, although directly in line with a distinct leadership approach, fall flat and drive animosity. Thoughts?
