It was the month of May 2004.
I along with 29 other Management Trainees were going through the orientation program.
The senior leaders from different divisions were making presentations about their respective businesses.
We noticed that many of the products were named with numbers.
Like Fevicol SR 998, Fevicol SR 505, Fevicol PL 111 etc.
During the question and answer session, we quizzed the chief of sales and marketing about the principles of branding.
And we did it in a tone that made us think we were the experts and the seasoned professionals in front of us were the novices!
The chief answered politely and explained the rationale behind such unique naming of the products.
He explained that these products were not consumer-centric. Applicators or carpenters used them. Since many of them were illiterate, they found reading and remembering numbers easier than names. He further elaborated that numbers had the added benefit of conveying adhesive strength. The higher the number, the stronger it is!
But after the session, while discussing it among ourselves, we made fun of it.
We were soaked in the theoretical world of Kotler and associates.
Instead of being open to understanding and assimilating the practical aspects of business, we displayed the arrogance of inexperience.
It lasted just 15 days.
The first encounter with the dealers and end-users brought us back to the reality that we had miles to go before we could even claim to be an expert in sales and marketing!
Remember this story when you start your management trainee stint.
Start with an open mind!

Embracing the Journey: Turning Every Learning Opportunity into a Stepping Stone 🌟
Reflecting on my journey, I am constantly reminded that nothing we learn ever truly goes to waste. Each experience, whether academic or professional, serves as a vital building block for our future endeavours.
All the formal education I've pursued has seamlessly paved the path to my next step. After completing my undergraduate degree, I chose to pursue an advanced diploma in college for more hands-on experience. This decision proved to be invaluable as it equipped me with practical skills that would later shape my career journey.
Transitioning from academia to the workforce, two people I met during my college years were pivotal in helping me secure my first job, highlighting the significance of networking and building connections along the way. This propelled me into a challenging role as a production supervisor turned manager at just 26 years old. This experience not only honed my leadership skills but also provided invaluable hands-on knowledge in a fast-paced environment.
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my journey was how my production manager role empowered me to save up and finance my Bachelor of Education. Despite my undergraduate degree from years prior not directly leading to a job, it opened doors to pursue a BEd, a decision I'll forever be grateful for. It's a testament to the endless possibilities that unfold when we embrace every opportunity with determination and perseverance.
As I embark on the next chapter of my career, I'm reminded that our paths are not always linear, but every twist and turn shapes us into who we are today. Here's to embracing the journey and cherishing every lesson learned along the way! #CareerJourney#ContinuousLearning#EmbraceOpportunities

In celebrating Megan Gregory's 14-year milestone at BHP, it's inspiring to witness the strides made towards gender diversity in the Queensland coal mining industry. The progress reflects a broader industry trend, where companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of diverse leadership. For instance, Fortescue Metals Group, IGO Ltd, Whitehaven Coal, and Deterra Royalties now boast more women than men on their boards, signalling a significant shift from traditional industry norms¹.
This evolution mirrors a conscious industry-wide effort to foster inclusive workplaces, acknowledging the unique challenges and opportunities that diversity brings. The narrative has moved beyond mere tokenism, emphasizing the need for authentic inclusion where diverse perspectives are valued and leveraged for strategic advantage².
However, despite these positive developments, challenges remain. The transition from entry-level positions to executive roles for women in mining is notably steep, with cultural and structural barriers still in place². It's clear that the journey towards full gender parity in the industry requires ongoing commitment and innovative strategies.
Megan's journey with BHP exemplifies the potential for personal and professional growth within an environment that values diversity and inclusion. Her story serves as a beacon for aspiring professionals in the mining industry, highlighting the importance of supportive networks, mentorship, and a culture that champions diversity at all levels.
As we commend Megan's achievements, let's also acknowledge the collective efforts of those working towards a more inclusive and equitable mining industry. The journey is far from over, but with trailblazers like Megan and many others, the path forward looks promising.

We had a Personality Development Program, it was a mandatory program before we attend our 1st End Semester Examination. This program was for five days. We had two external trainers, Mr.Krishna kumar and Mrs.Mirthula. From day one we were not meant to be students but as a management trainees.
Initially we were divided into teams and each team had their own brand name and logo. My team had seven members and we represented our team as “EAGLE EYED” and I was been selected as team lead. Everyday was a challenge and had a great peer learning that had intense impact on each of us. We were give points for each management activity. We were also assessed for our Professionalism, Grooming, Manners and Team work.
Throughout our five days of training program we had a practice of diary writing, which i consider to be an important practice.
As a Team lead, it was a challenging task to coordinate team members and get things done and had a great learning process throughout. Making wise decisions and having an interpersonal connection was also challenging. We had the best trainees who guided us in all ways and made sure we develop our personality.
The key takeaways are Time management, Multitasking, Risk taking, Smart work, Innovation, Decision making, Patience, Adaptability.
It was an eye opening experience and a most needed one.
