📢 Exciting News: I'm thrilled to share that our latest review article, titled "Frequency Regulation Strategies in Renewable Energy-Dominated Power Systems: Issues, Challenges, Innovations, and Future Trends," is now available in the prestigious Elsevier, "Advanced Frequency Regulation Strategies in Renewable-Dominated Power Systems" Academic Press. 🌍🔌Key Contributions: In an era of rapid renewable energy integration, Our research addresses the critical need for effective frequency regulation in today's stochastic power systems. We explore primary and secondary frequency regulation control loops, with a special focus on load frequency control (LFC) in secondary regulation for both conventional power networks and multiarea power systems driven by hybrid renewable energy sources. The IET Smart Grid (Impact Factor 2.3) featured article from Issue 5 2023 has now been chosen! Overview of Frequency Control Techniques in Power Systems with High-Inverter-Based Resources: Challenges and Mitigation Measures Written by Dlzar Al Kez, Aoife Foley, Faraedoon Ahmed and D. John Morrow. This paper presents a comprehensive review of grid frequency stability challenges concerning the massive integration of IBR. The increasing penetration of inverter‐based resources (IBR) poses a significant threat to power system stability. Accordingly, ancillary services are needed to mitigate potential stability issues. It thereafter extensively compares the international fast frequency response services that are for addressing low inertia challenges in renewable dominant power systems. The paper also discusses the potential of renewable technologies and resources to provide frequency services. The findings can deepen our understanding of frequency challenges caused by IBR, and provide evidence informing new energy research and policymaking. The journal editorial team highlight a featured article in each issue. Our paper entitled "Budget constrained Emission Reduction in Economic and Environmental Dispatch" is now available online in IEEE Xplore. This paper was presented at 2023 IEEE international conference on power electronics, smart grid and renewable energy (#PESGRE). The highlight of the paper is: "A significant emission reduction is achievable by a small increase in the budget of power dispatch". This approach may be useful for industries in power sectors in planning their emission reduction strategies. Great news! Our paper "Efficiency Characteristic and Operating Area of High-Power Reconfigurable Batteries" got accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. The work evolved as part of my external research stay at Politecnico di Milano, where I collaborated with Luigi Piegari and Samuele Grillo to develop new design and control approaches for future battery technologies. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭? The paper is focused on batteries with variable topology that can dynamically reconfigure their cells in real time. This makes them fully controllable power components, operating without converter. In our work, we show how to derive the battery efficiency for every point (voltage, power) of their operating area. Moreover, we compare the results to conventional batteries with fixed topology and DC-DC converter. Efficiency maps facilitate: 🔋 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 & 𝘴𝘪𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨: Tailor operating area and efficiency for specific applications, considering energy, voltage, power, and efficiency requirements. ⚖ 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: Quantify the impact of individual components on power losses, finding a balance between investment costs and energy efficiency. 💡 𝘉𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘺 & 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵: In-depth knowledge of operating limits and efficiency values for all operating points enables advanced control and management decisions.    𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞? We demonstrate our method on a 104 kWh prototype of a reconfigurable battery, which was developed as part of the H2020 INSULAE Project and the TOPChargE project. The battery can adapt its voltage from 0 V up to 1200 V, and reaches power values of 240 kW for charging, and 280 kW for discharging. The derived efficiency map for this battery prototype is presented in the following figure.
