HOW TRIBAL ARE YOU? What I find interesting in this post (and what I combatted in myself) is the enormous suspicion again “the others”. Having had the enriching opportunity to function in different guilds myself, having understood the arguments of “the others” and seen their sincerity, which I respect, I started realizing that when one is right the other one is not nescessairly wrong. That narrowed the problems down to the very challenging question: under what circumstances are they both right? In my comments below I show you a block diagram where both temperature and concentration in CO2 determine the pH of water, to prove my point: the pH of water not only depends on the concentration in CO2 but also on temperature. Something else we fail to understand is that the beauty of our earth is comparable to that of an old fashioned watch which you open and see all the little cogs driving each other…such is our system earth, if one cog goes faster than the others due to a factor external to the system, things go wrong. We are dealing with all very well established rates of change but if the Arctic gets too hot, than the pressure systems above the Americas dysfunction, we get less land to sea winds in Peru, and we get a dramatic El Nino event, were fish end up rotting because of lack of oxygen. The question that follows from these insights: how to create a scientist guild that is less “tribal”, more modest, more multidisciplinairy. Because, believe it or not: my regression analysis of anthropogenic CO2 and ocean emitted CO2 as recorded in the Keeling curve has a determination coefficient (R2) of 0,56 and a probability (p) of 10E-11 and we don’t want the high latitudes to get any warmer!

As natural ecosystems require diversity of species, so too does the collective conscience of society benefit from an exposure from a diversity of opposing perspectives. Case in point is the idea of anthropogenic acidification of global oceans. The opposing perspective is based on the fact that oceanic regions with the highest biological activity are those with the lowest pH. The regions highlighted in red represent where carbonic acid enriched deep water upwells into the well mixed surface layer. The explosion in productivity in these upwelling regions is due to Walker Circulation (https://lnkd.in/gZxqZh3m) or Ekman Pumping (https://lnkd.in/gCNTdFZv) that transports nutrients at depth up to the surface where sunlight exists and photosynthesis can occur. The ultimate source of these nutrients (e.g., carbonic acid, phosphate, nitrate) is the Earth`s Crust and geological activity. This is the frame of reference that I use when considering the likelihood of a ecosystem collapse due to anthropogenic acidification. In virtually every case presented as evidence of an anthropogenic finger print, the causative factor is changes in atmospheric circulation over longer time frames that alter the geochemistry of the well mixed surface layer. As I work on my Astrobiology paper here at Dartmouth College, I became interested in the analogies made between Earth soils and Martian Soil!🪐 Did you know about the Martian Soil Analog Found in Atacama Desert!🌵 🌱Scientists unearth living microorganisms just 30cm beneath the Atacama Desert's surface. 🌱Atacama's arid landscape closely mimics Mars' conditions, offering a perfect testbed for studying extraterrestrial soil. 🌱Atacama's hyper-arid environment shares striking resemblances with Mars' surface, including low moisture levels and extreme temperatures. 🌱Studying Atacama's soil provides insights into how life may adapt and thrive in Martian-like conditions, advancing our understanding of potential habitats beyond Earth. Some good news in all that has been life since Oct 7th: Coauthors from #LamontEarth and I have recently published a new paper testing a particular aspect of Nd isotopes as #paleocirculation tracers. Our oceans play a pivotal role in #ClimateChange, where research hints at the importance of Atlantic Ocean currents in particular. To explore ocean circulation in the past, scientists often use neodymium (Nd) isotopes for #paleoclimate and #AMOC reconstructions. Nd-isotopes are invaluable for tracing past ocean circulation because : (1) In the modern ocean they mimic deep water mass mixing, and (2) North Atlantic and North Pacific global ocean mixing end-member water mass compositions can be constrained through time. Our study tackles a particular challenge in Nd-isotope research. It's known that Nd-isotopes may be influenced by changes in the endmember Nd-concentrations, complicating their use in tracing paleo-ocean circulation. Our Bayesian sensitivity test results reveal that Nd-isotopes at intermediate locations are insensitive to changes in end-member Nd-concentrations over interglacial-glacial cycles. This means a crucial win for Nd-isotopes reliability as a #paleocirculation proxy! In conclusion, our study highlights the potential of Nd-isotope ratios in tracing past ocean circulation, even amidst changes in past end-member Nd-concentrations. IS OUR EARTH 🌎 ALIVE ? The Gaia hypothesis, also known as Gaia theory or Gaia principle, proposes that all organisms and their inorganic surroundings on Earth are closely integrated to form a single and self-regulating complex system, maintaining the conditions for life on the planet. The scientific investigation of the Gaia hypothesis focuses on observing how the biosphere and the evolution of life forms🦠🐟🌾🦓 contribute to the stability of global temperature 🌎🌡,ocean salinity 🌊, oxygen in the atmosphere and other factors of habitability in a preferred homeostasis. The Gaia hypothesis was formulated by the chemist James Lovelock and co-developed by the microbiologist Lynn Margulis in the 1970s. Initially received with hostility by the scientific community, it is now studied in the disciplines of geophysiology and Earth system science, and some of its principles have been adopted in fields like biogeochemistry and systems ecology. The study of traces like burrows, borings, and footprints, which mark biological behaviour on Earth, is known as #ichnology. Despite its significance, this field has been somewhat overlooked in #astrobiology. The goal of this post is to explore the potential of #Astroichnology, or the application of ichnology in the search for past and present life beyond #Earth. While organisms are often considered more direct evidence of life, traces and trace fossils provide key insights! Firstly, traces accurately record the activity of soft-bodied organisms, (think of annelids and prokaryotes), which are underrepresented in the fossil record yet constitute most of the benthic biomass. Secondly, trace fossils are often the only evidence of life in otherwise unfossiliferous sediments. Thirdly, bioturbation and bioerosion alter the substrate's physico-chemical properties, leaving behind visual, (bio-)geochemical and petrographic signals that can be associated with the presence of life. Lastly, the bioturbating activity of organisms often results in structures that are far more abundant and detectable than the organisms themselves. For example, certain arthropods create km-scale mounded topographies in aquatic environments!
