The Report on Wage Practices 2023 was released today. Wages continued to grow, albeit at a more moderate pace compared to 2022: 🔷 Real wages grew by 0.4% in 2023 after accounting for inflation, similar to the increase in 2022 🔷 Nominal wage growth slowed from 6.5% in 2022 to 5.2% in 2023, although it remained higher than the range seen in non-recessionary years 🔷 The proportion of profitable establishments remained high, and a majority continued to provide wage increases to their employees The Government encourages all firms to implement the Flexible Wage System to give them the flexibility and responsiveness to adjust wages based on their performance. Falls from height were among the top causes of workplace fatalities in 2023. Between February and April 2024, we conducted over 1,000 inspections and took steps to correct poor work-at-height practices. Employers and workers can visit go.gov.sg/letspreventfalls to learn more about safe work-at-height procedures, including: 🔹 Implementing adequate fall prevention or protection systems like guard rails, and covers for openings 🔹 Ensuring safe access and egress from heights and equipping workers with effective fall arrest or travel restraint systems 🔹 Developing comprehensive fall prevention plans and permit-to-work systems to mitigate risks effectively Everyone has a part to play in building a strong culture of workplace safety and health excellence in Singapore. Singapore’s labour market continued to expand in the first quarter of 2024, reflecting improved economic prospects for the year. Here are some of the highlights: ⬆ Total number of job vacancies increased ⬆ Total employment grew, contributed solely by resident employment 💼 Unemployment inched up slightly; however resident long-term unemployment rate remained low ⬇ Retrenchments continued on a downward trend; majority of retrenched workers were able to find a new job within six months 📢 More employers said they intend to hire in the next three months The Government and tripartite partners will continue to encourage and support employers and workers to press on with business transformation and upskilling to improve job quality. From improved productivity to better employee retention, there are many benefits that come with supporting employees requiring parental leave. For eligible working fathers of children born from 1 January 2024, they now have their Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL) doubled to 4 weeks. As an employer, you can voluntarily grant these 2 additional weeks of GPPL to respective employees who may wish to spend more time caring for their children. These will be reimbursed accordingly by the Government.
