Not only Thrive but also Adaptive 🌟 We had the privilege of joining a coffee chat with our ASEAN SVP Vijayanand Sinha who shared invaluable insights from his extensive experience as a country manager and his journey with Reckitt. His words were not only inspiring but also deeply insightful. During our conversation, he highlighted the importance of being assertive yet kind. He emphasized that we should confidently share our opinions, backed by facts and evidence, while maintaining respect and empathy for others. This balance is crucial for fostering a positive and productive work environment. He also shared his belief that to thrive globally, especially in the diverse ASEAN market, adaptability is key. He encouraged us to step out of our comfort zones and be willing to work across different regions. This global mindset is essential for personal and professional growth. Reflecting on his journey, he said he joined Reckitt because it is agile, fast, and entrepreneurial - exactly what he was looking for. His advice to himself, if he could go back to his first day at Reckitt, was to embrace these qualities fully and practice assertive kindness every day. My first in-house comms role was at AOL. Remember them? (answers in the comments!) I had been leading teams and clients at a PR agency for years, and thought moving in-house would be a) easy b) less stressful and c) an easier road to a communications leadership role. Turns out, I still had soooo much to learn about communications and about what being a leader really meant. And there wasn't structured, tailored support out there to help me do it. (Although h/t to my line manager Vicky Prior for her excellent advice, role modelling and patience with me, always! I was a scamp.) Nearly 20 years later, there's still a worrying lack of professional development provision out there for mid-career communications and PR professionals. Who aspire to a Head of Comms or Director of Comms position, but who don't typically gain access to the type of leadership development required to help them get there. I want to fix that. My new group coaching programme "Step Up To Leadership" gives you the tools, techniques and insight you need to accelerate your leadership journey in communications. "When entering any new organisation, career or role, we need to consider what success looks like for us – whether it’s a promotion or a lateral move – and what it will take to get there..... There may not be value in being loud about it, but certainly being vocal is necessary." It takes intentionality, self-love and often a lot of patience to get there and Gontse Madumo 's tips on how to do this are easily 'relate-able' which makes them more valuable to me. 👌🏾

Another statistic from our recent future careers survey. conducted with ICON APAC. We were keen to get a sense of how Executive Leadership Teams are performing - or perceived to be performing - by the people working in the BDMC function. The results were evenly mixed and our observation is that in some cases a negative perception of the ELT can be linked to lack of investment in consistent #internalcommunications. When a firm is undertaking transformative change, or navigating a challenging market, it is crucial for leadership to communicate clearly what the major strategies are and how this affects the business. In 2023 we saw an increase in the number of internal communications roles we were engaged to hire for #professionalservices firms. It is useful to note that the reputation or performance of the ELT rarely factored in the main reasons why candidates leave or join firms. The majority of people surveyed felt the ELT was operating well and were setting a clear, and ambitious direction. Management of professional services were once regularly criticised for being traditional, risk averse or slow to respond to market; so this positive sentiment from within the professions is encouraging. The end of a busy week for me. I'll be soon transitioning into my Fri..yay feeling to spend the day with my 20 month old, do the school pick ups and watch my sons football tournament (praying the rain will ease!). But before I do - I wanted to share my highlights of the week: ✔ Had an interesting conversation with about leading a listening organisation where it brought home just how critical it is with such a multigenerational workforce. ✔ Put my storytelling and design thinking to the test to build a stronger connection for teams to understand their strategy into action and visa versa. ✔ Attended a great event run by 106 Communications where we discussed EVP, the need to invest in it more and the move to more collaboration across IC, HR, Marketing and leaders. More insight on that to come. ✔ Did some planning for a client on their big leadership comms milestones for the next quarter. ✔ Developed a comms strategy and plan that fully aligns with a new culture shift. ✔ Last - but no means least. Here are some highlights: 🌐 Opened a dedicated research centre: We inaugurated a research centre in partnership with Sasin School of Management committed to exploring the business case for neurodiversity at work. 📈 Developed a baseline inclusion assessment: Our team created a comprehensive inclusion assessment to aid organisations in crafting meaningful inclusion action plans, whether they are just beginning or building upon existing DEI efforts. 🌍 B Corp Certified: Achieving B Corp certification has empowered us to connect with like-minded businesses globally, fostering collaboration and shared values. 🤝 Private sector partnerships: We established groundbreaking partnerships with the private sector, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to attract and retain neurodivergent talent.
