We’re excited to announce that the Museum is acquiring “Corolla” (2022) by Michelle S. Cho, thanks to the generosity of the Northern Trust Purchase Prize at EXPO CHICAGO. “The Museum is delighted to bring this extraordinary piece into its collection,” said Margaret Andera, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. “The sculpture’s pearlescent materiality—Cho’s source materials, her use of pewter—evokes dialogue about consumer culture, the environment, and obsolescence. It will be an exemplary complement to both the contemporary art and design collections.” “Thanks to Northern Trust, EXPO CHICAGO, and Fragment Gallery for providing the Milwaukee Art Museum with the opportunity to invest in emerging artist Michelle S. Cho at a significant moment in her career,” said Liz Siegel, Chief Curator. https://lnkd.in/gDfX9eis

Looking forward to visiting the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth to see Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's exhibition. From Jaune's website: "I am a cultural arts worker because I, not only, paint, do printmaking, some sculpture, draw, make collage, do public art, but I am also an independent teacher/professor and activist. I lecture, teach printmaking workshops, jury, curate, write and organize exhibitions for the Native community. In my work I use humor and satire to present narratives on ethical treatment of animals, humans and our planet. My work is philosophically centered by my strong traditional Salish beliefs."
“Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map” opens at the Modern on October 15, in less than two weeks. Organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art, this retrospective brings together nearly fifty years of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures. Across decades and mediums, Smith (b. 1940, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation) has deployed and reappropriated ideas of mapping, history, and environmentalism while incorporating personal and collective memories. The retrospective offers new frameworks in which to consider contemporary Native American art and shows how Smith has led and initiated some of the most pressing dialogues surrounding land, racism, and cultural preservation—issues at the forefront of contemporary life and art today. Art is innate to all humans, but it is today mostly framed as decorative business. The Fifth Element initiative by The Club of Rome questions this framing and enquires into the role of art in bringing about a societal transformation. We work with the Future Of Work Foundation and other partners to help humanity emerge from our current crises into desirable futures through art. Learn more ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dgg4VCSc

“The ‘modern’ in American Art is, more often than not, multiple contemporaneous moderns, different expressions of the modern with distinct sources and intentions. But whatever their differences, each expression was made possible by changing perceptions of what constituted art, the forms it could take, and how and by whom it might be created. This shared foundation is the focus of this year’s conference.” –IAC President Lisa Koenigsberg on Multiple Modernities, Initiatives in Art and Culture’s 28th Annual American Arts Conference. Targeted to collectors, gallerists, museum professionals, and academics/anyone interested in exploring American Art, the conference will explore artists such as Mary Cassatt, Arthur Dove, Georgia O’Keeffe, Beatrice Wood, Ben Shahn, and Man Ray, specific approaches and contributions to the modern by Black and Indigenous artists, and the dynamic interplay of different regional expressions of the modern in the 20th century. About IAC’s American Art conference, Marty O’Brien, president of the O’Brien Art Foundation, observed: “I have been attending for 25 years. The networking at this longstanding event is invaluable and there is really no other forum out there devoted exclusively to American art.” Each conference, he added, “is a unique, deep dive into an entirely different facet” of American Art. The conference will be held at Heritage Auctions’ newly expanded Park Avenue Gallery. Explained Aviva Lehmann, Heritage Auctions’ Senior Vice President, American Art, New York, “Heritage Auctions, the largest auction house founded in the US, believes deeply in the significance and value of American Art, and we are thrilled to be hosting the conference. American Art has been, and continues to be, uniquely modern and at Heritage, we delight in this notion.” #initiativesinartandculture #nycevents #americanmodernart #beauforddelaney #georgiaokeeffe #benshahn

One of the coolest things about architecture is the fact that we can literally immerse ourselves within the creative outcome. As a visual artist, I really envy this aspect of the architectural profession. Really really do. My world is limited to "Hey Mom, look what I made." An architect can say "Let's go inside!" Not too long ago I was in Bentonville, Arkansas visiting the amazing Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Stunning architecture and a treasure trove of iconic American artwork - Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Asher B. Durand, Norman Rockwell, William Merritt Chase, Maxfield Parrish, Cincinnati's Robert S. Duncanson, Whistler - you name it, it's there. For a kid who loves both architecture and painting, it's a super combo. I was struck by this dome within the main area of the building, having absolutely no idea that one of my all-time favorite clients, Draper Inc., with whom I've worked for over 21 years, had designed and engineered its shading element - giant operable "sails," 14 feet wide at the bottom and 2 feet wide at the top - that is, until my dear friend Penny Sitler, LEED AP shared this the other day. Architects, give this a watch. There's also a shade structure application featured in the video for the museum's outdoor amphitheater with a really clever design and function. I could get in trouble for saying this, but Draper is one of those special manufacturers which not only is qualified for these types of unique challenges, their engineers might actually welcome them. Worth an ask, at least, am I right? #aia #architects #csi #specifiers #aias #design #museumdesign #entrearchitect
Safdie Architects had a strong vision for a domed addition to the lobby at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. They wanted sail shades to meet in the middle of the dome and knew exactly what they wanted to accomplish. However, they didn't know how to engineer the solution. That’s where Draper comes into the story.

Public art is a reflection of our cultures with diverse meanings for the communities that interact with it. In all its forms, public art provokes reactions from the public. Conserving it is a complex process that involves different actors, with local communities playing a significant role in creating, assigning values, advocating for what needs to be preserved and, in some cases, conserving what is valued. Also important is the relationship between public art and museums. 'Public Art Inside and Out, which will take place in a hybrid form, aims to include a wide variety of professionals to exchange ideas-from practitioners to researchers and academics, artists, art historians, curators, conservators, architects, city planners, policy makers, collectors, benefactors and institutions procuring public art. Registration for in-person and online participation will close on 30th April. Read the full program and get your registration via the link in the comments.
