White walls, ample spacing, no overt pairings or bifurcations such as ‘figuration’ or ‘abstraction.’” Continue reading the “50 Paintings” review by Debra Brehmer of Portrait Society Gallery in Hyperallergic. https://lnkd.in/gNZGuTQg Delve into the exhibition with artists Nigel Cooke, Byron Kim, and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung and art critic Barry Schwabsky at this week’s Expert Series event! Walking into an Anselm Kiefer exhibition is a deeply impactful experience that simply makes you stop in your tracks in sheer wonder and amazement. Anselm Kiefer’s use of scale, texture, alchemy, biblical and historical references touching upon complicit guilt are always astounding and awe inspiring. Anselm Kiefer's art deeply intertwines with alchemy, symbolizing transformation and creation. His works, often monumental, use alchemical symbols to explore themes of history, memory, and decay. This approach allows Kiefer to address complex subjects like German history and the Holocaust, transforming materials and symbols to reflect on cultural and personal regeneration. Alchemy, for Kiefer, becomes a metaphor for artistic creation and the transformative power of art. His use and technique of “impasto” is an important aspect of his work, as it adds to the texture and dimensionality of his paintings. Impasto is a technique of applying thick layers of paint, often with a palette knife, creating a sculptural effect on the canvas. Writing Credit: Mignon Marshall Article Courtesy: Ocula

An important highlight of the current exhibition is the painting "Et in Arcadia ego" (1630/2016) by Nicolas Poussin, which represents the next period in the work of RASSIM® - since 2006 the artist has been painting with organic materials and natural pigments such as urine, salt, burnt motor oil, petroleum and bluestone. Although an exact compositional replication of the original, this work from the "Old Pictures" series can be referred to as "unfinished" due to the sketchy nature of its pictorial development and the looser treatment of form, background, and overlooked details. Such a presentation of the author in front of the public is rare in contemporary art, because to a large extent the already mentioned "aura" derives from the mystery of genius, from the work hidden from all viewers in the studio, and from the illusion of almost non-artificial perfection - an illusion maintained by institutional standards in the art world. That is why this time, not with the yellow gloves from the cover of a magazine, but with white gloves and directly from his studio, RASSIM® provokes with a frank look at the unfinished and imperfect, but carefully preserved for years paintings and preparatory drawings. We must ask the question, do unfinished works have a legitimate place in the exhibition halls or are such attempts exotic, valuable only to researchers and specialists? This institutional case can be answered in principle positively - that in the world of art today everything is subject to legitimisation - especially if it falls within the field of historical science. And precisely because final conclusions are the prerogative of art history, I believe that within the framework of this exposition, freed from academic commitments, we can allow ourselves to form a preliminary and partially adjusted idea of the "unfinished works" of RASSIM®. Ivan Stefanov * The opening of the exhibition will take place on the 15th of May 2024 at 19:00 in the space of ONE Gallery, address: 1A Dyakon Ignatiy Str.!

Art Shanghai Gallery is pleased to introduce you one of our artists, Xu Weibo, from our current exhibition 'Confluence of Time'. Born in Shantou, Guangdong, in 1987, Xu Weibo is a graduate of the Chinese Painting Department of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In this exhibition, three long-standing series of artworks will be presented: "Standard Image of Fire," "Let There Be Light," and "Ordinary Objects." His upbringing experiences in the Chaoshan region serve as the central thread linking his creative endeavors. The diverse traditional customs and festivities in Chaoshan contribute to a unique cultural ambiance, reflecting the locals' reverence for deities, adherence to tradition, and zest for life. These elements subtly permeate Xu Weibo's artworks. Another consistent element across Xu Weibo's three series is his use of foil materials. By employing silver and copper foils that oxidize over time when exposed to heat, these materials yield unique painterly qualities in the artworks, thereby creating fresh narratives and visual compositions. This transformative process not only enriches the artworks' expressive capabilities but also bestows upon them distinct stylistic traits in terms of composition, coloration, and manipulation of light and shadow, resulting in a heightened visual distinctiveness.

I work as a free-lance art historian/artist/writer/archivist/librarian/illustrator, &c. at The Frame Blog
An exhibition of De László's work is coming to the refurbished and expanded Gainsborough's House in the spring and early summer. This is exciting, not only because of the flair and skill of his portraits, but for his choice of frames. They were very important to him as part of the complete work of art, and sometimes betray, through colour marks at the sight edge, the fact that he almost invariably finished each painting in its frame, in order to bring the whole thing into harmony. If you would like to know more about this side to his work, there's a piece here: https://lnkd.in/eHN-zpem

Murals. Sculptures. And more. Lots of public art. Public art is where I spend a big chunk of my time. I work with communities and organizations to provide public art opportunities for artists. I also make some public art. I've found I prefer working in the public art world. The "canvases" are much larger - sidewalks, sides of buildings, etc.. Your art is seen by a wider range of audience on a daily basis. Public art perks up everyone's day. Finding opportunities to exhibit your work doesn't have to be limited to traditional gallery spaces. Am I saying, "Ignore the galleries!"? Of course not. But as an artist it makes sense to think beyond the "four white walls". That being said, stay tuned. I have some gallery exhibits showcasing new work coming up later this year. So while I'm a big proponent of public art, galleries are still part of the "being an artist" equation. I've recently been sitting down with Craig Tirey of Slow Down Cowboy studios at Front Street in Dayton, Ohio. We've been recording a podcast series interviewing Dayton artists about being an artist. The topic of alternative venues arises frequently. It is interesting hearing how different artists are finding ways to show (and sell) their art and skills. I’d like to hear your stories about how you approach your art business and finding non-gallery ways to show and sell your art. Comment below. #publicart #artists #art #businessofart
