The AW609 tiltrotor programme set another major industry capability milestone after its first successful ship trial, which was recently conducted with the support of the Italian Navy (Marina Militare Italiana), Leonardo Helicopters said in a press release. From 3-12 April, the AW609 AC4 aircraft, fully representative of the final production configuration, performed demonstration trials relocating from Leonardo’s facility based in Cascina Costa (Samarate) to Maristaer Grottaglie Naval Base. The tiltrotor, with test pilots and flight test engineers from Leonardo (supported by Italian Navy personnel for the embarked operations), took off from the base inbound from the Italian aircraft carrier (ITS CAVOUR – Navy Fleet Flagship), 20 nm offshore, showing its effective approach, stable deck landing, and touchdown capabilities. During the demonstration, the AW609 provided a unique opportunity to further strengthen the awareness of the outstanding advantages of Leonardo’s tiltrotor in a dedicated maritime environment. This testifies how the world’s first tiltrotor set to achieve a civil certification meets demanding operational and safety standards. Therefore it is ideally positioned to meet a range of government and public service needs, in Italy and globally. On April 30, 1950, the Sud-Est Grognard made its maiden flight, marking the beginning of a short-lived but intriguing chapter in French military aviation history. Designed as a single-seat, low-level ground-attack aircraft, the Grognard was intended to serve the French Armée de l'Air in the 1950s.However, despite its promising design and potential, the Grognard program was ultimately cancelled in favor of the Sud-Ouest Vautour II. This decision marked the end of the Grognard's development, leaving behind a legacy of what could have been. #military #defense #defence #aerospace #aviation #aircraft #aircrafts #airplane #airplanes #aviationlovers #militaryaviation #militaryaircraft #fighterjet #engineering #technology #militarytechnology #defensetechnology #defenseinnovation #defenseindustry #airforce

How to increase your Radar Cross Section? Whack on the WD40... I'm currently reading 'Harrier 809' by the brilliant Rowland White (see also: 'Vulcan 607', 'Phoenix Squadron' and countless other real accounts of air force derring-do). Harrier 809 recounts the preparations ahead of, and combat in, the Falklands Conflict by the Royal Naval Air Squadron of Sea Harriers (or 'SHARs'). I wanted to share one fascinating insight: during fighter trials at RNAS Yeovilton prior to 809's deployment, it was found, much to their initial confusion, that different aircraft of the same squadron had significantly different radar signatures. Different aircraft, but all SHARs. It was discovered that the difference lay in the ground crew's diligent and generous application of WD40 to some aircraft, to protect them from the corrosive effects of briny sea air. It was duly decided that the risk of a bit of weathering was the lesser of the two evils and the WD40 was scrubbed away. For more interesting insights like this, Rowland White actually summarised his top 21 discoveries in the writing of Harrier 809 here: https://lnkd.in/eKyRnXim #rowlandwhite #RNAS #Harrier #Defence #Falklands

On 17 November 2021, Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II ZM152 (BK-18) of Royal Air Force (RAF) 617 Squadron, crashed into the eastern Mediterranean, during take off from HMS Queen Elizabeth. As the ship sailed past the wreckage before it sank, an intake blank was seen to float free. Was the loss of this £181.1 million fighter simply because ‘someone’ was negligent or incompetent? No. This deep dive case study demonstrates that real life is more complex. #aviation #aviationsafety #flightdeck #humanfactors #hmi #CIEHF #RAeS

Ukraine will receive 42 units of F-16s. 42 is three squadrons or an air regiment. Most likely they will be F-16AM/BM Block 20 MLU - a modification that is in service with the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Norway. The Block 20 itself is quite an old generation of F-16s, which entered service back in 1982. But the AM/BM MLU modification is interesting, as it has an improved cockpit and avionics equivalent to the Block 50/52. Also added the ability to launch air-to-air missiles with radar homing and generally improved flight characteristics. In other words, it is actually a model upgraded to mid-90s technology.

On this day in history 06/19/24. In 1944 June 19th was day one of the two-day Battle of the Philippine Sea, US naval forces defeated the Japanese fleet in World War II. The Battle of the Philippine Sea was a major naval battle of World War II on 19–20 June 1944 that eliminated the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ability to conduct large-scale carrier actions. It took place during the United States’ amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands during the Pacific War. The battle was the last of five major “carrier-versus-carrier” engagements between American and Japanese naval forces, and pitted elements of the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet against ships and aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Mobile Fleet and nearby island garrisons. This was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history, involving 24 aircraft carriers, deploying roughly 1,350 carrier-based aircraft. The aerial part of the battle was nicknamed the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot by American aviators for the severely disproportional loss ratio inflicted upon Japanese aircraft by American pilots and anti-aircraft gunners. During a debriefing after the first two air battles, a pilot from USS Lexington remarked “Why, hell, it was just like an old-time turkey shoot down home!” A very fortunate result of the Battle of the Philippine Sea for the Allies was it greatly benefited General MacArthur’s invasion of Biak in Dutch New Guinea which started weeks before the Mariana Islands operations started. Now you know. Abstracted from On This Day & Wikipedia. #onthisdayinhistory #battleofthephilippinesea #marianasturkeyshoot #wwii #navalbattle #year1944

Here’s a photo to boost the national pride of any country – too bad that country isn’t Canada. Instead, the beating hearts of our Australian cousins must be bursting, as a flight of state-of-the-art aircraft pass over an All-Australian naval task force. Canada is incapable of organizing a similar photo opportunity – not even close! Rather than the brand-new Boeing Wedgetail electronic control aircraft leading a pack of Super Hornets, the best we could muster would be a propellor driven Lockheed Aurora sub hunter, a class of warplane that entered service in 1980. While the CF-18 Hornets we could send aloft are the earliest versions possible, a warplane that first entered the RCAF’s ranks in 1982 – long before any of its pilots were even born. As far as the naval element in the photo is concerned, we have nothing comparable. A handful of 30-year-old frigates make up the bulk of our maritime defense capabilities, and of those only a few could go to sea if called upon. Canada has a population of nearly 39 million, while Australia’s population barely tops 26 million, yet it’s obvious that it is far more serious about defending itself, and of playing an ever-greater role on the world stage than Canada is. Generations of government neglect, public apathy, a rose-tinted viewpoint about the state of the world and a passive belief that “the Americans will always protect us” has allowed our military to crumble into obsolescence and impotence. Canada once had a hard earned place at the high table, now we’ve been relegated to the children’s table, while the adults make all the decisions – including those that will impact us. #military #canada #weakness
