Let's talk about life. It's messy, unpredictable, and rarely follows the script we've written for it. From the chaos at work to the surprises waiting at home, it's easy to feel like we're constantly battling against the tide. For me, this might mean finding a new piercing on my teenager, dealing with our old washing machine's leaks, or the dog eating the pizza because he wasn't fed. And let's not forget the nerve-wracking moments like receiving unsettling news from a routine medical check-up. Yup, that's life! You can't escape it, but you can navigate it. You've weathered storms before, and you'll do it again. Acknowledging life's challenges, accepting them, and understanding that they're temporary allows you to approach them with calmness and clarity. You're not alone in this, and you'll figure it out. It's going to be okay. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder to prioritize our emotional wellbeing. At Sigma Design, we're taking this opportunity to shine a light on mental health each week of the month during our all-hands meetings. We're providing lessons on mindfulness, offering an emotional wellbeing seminar, and we're proud to offer year-round mental health support through our benefits package. But it's not just about what we provide; it's about encouraging everyone to take advantage of these resources and take time away from work when needed. We recognize that we're more than our jobs, and it's crucial to prioritize self-care. Whether it's pursuing a hobby, immersing yourself in nature, reading, spending quality time with your family (or taking a breather from them), or simply taking a walk, it's essential to carve out space for yourself. Disconnecting from the daily grind allows you to reconnect with yourself and the world around you. A mindful approach to work and life involves learning to be fully present and engaged in the moment without judgment. It's about intentionally focusing on what you're doing, thinking, and feeling while minimizing the distractions vying for your attention. By setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and nurturing connections, you can navigate life's ups and downs with grace and resilience. Set boundaries. Be Mindful. Connect.

I recently read a book called Lost Connections by Johann Hari. I highly recommend it to anybody interested in gaining a deeper understanding of depression and anxiety. Among many other things, it highlights the importance of a systematic, strategic, and holistic approach to building mental skills and emotional health instead of only addressing the signs and symptoms of our problems. Here are three thematic takeaways that align with my experiences working in wellbeing so far: 1. One of my favourite quotes in the book is, "It's time to stop asking what's wrong with them and start asking what happened to them." How can we accurately understand a person's wellbeing and emotional health without a detailed understanding of their context? Signs and symptoms on a checklist only tell part of the story. Only addressing signs and symptoms is like calling the fire brigade to your house fire to come with fans that blow away the smoke. If you want to learn more about holistic approaches to mental health, a great starting point is reading about mental health from a salutogenic perspective. If YouTube is more your jam, watch Dr Corey Keyes' TEDx talk on a positive approach to healthcare. 2. We've over-indexed on individualism. Healthy relationships and connected communities and cultures are incredibly good for our wellbeing. The sports teams you can't hate, companies with great staff-reported reputations, and communities that come together all share principles of collectivism that improve wellbeing and performance. Being apart of something bigger than ourselves provides us with a sense of importance and motivation. Lost Connections highlights the impact on our mental health when a society is too individualistic, and as a result, this can lead us to worry alone, struggle alone, and attempt to work it out alone. If we want to master self-help, we must also look up to understand and help others, too. 3. Think of what can be added to improve your life, rather than what 'needs' to be taken away first. Construct solutions rather than doubling down on trying to eliminate problems. What can be added to your life that will move you toward feeling good and functioning well this week? Creating goals around actions you can add to your week will help you focus on moving in a desired direction. Problems will happily take our attention if we don't practice consciously directing it towards the choices we have. Easier said then done, so start small. Practices could include gratitude, mindfulness, random acts of kindness, exercise, setting weekly goals, etc. Focus on the additions that improve your week in the presence of whatever conditions show up. In summary - Lost Connections by Johann Hari. Great book. Chuck it on your list.

Trauma-Informed Therapist & Wellness Consultant | Helping Corporations Enhance Employee Wellness & Prevent Burnout
This past week, I had the opportunity to work with Durham Habitat for Humanity, guiding their amazing board through meditation and wellness practices. Seeing how much these sessions positively impacted their well-being was a reminder of how important it is to prioritize mental health at work—especially in environments where people are constantly giving their all. The Business Journals recently pointed out, “Employers have a unique opportunity to address burnout by providing mental health resources, encouraging work-life balance, and fostering an environment of support.” After witnessing firsthand the difference a small pause for mindfulness can make, I’m even more convinced that this kind of support is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity. If your team is feeling the weight of burnout or stress, now might be the perfect time to explore ways to offer them some mental health resources. Whether it's guided meditation, stress management workshops, or wellness programs, these tools can make a huge difference. If you’re looking to bring this type of support to your staff, I’d love to connect. Let’s help your team recharge and thrive both at home and work https://lnkd.in/eu7UcK-v

Stress Awareness Month 2024 is here, and it’s an opportune time to focus on our well-being. This annual event, observed every April, aims to raise awareness about stress, provide solutions, and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. The theme for this year is “Little By Little, A Little Becomes A Lot. As part of our dedication to supporting the welfare of our conference guests, we’ve added a series of breathing and mindfulness exercises to both our day and overnight event packages at no additional charge. Our suite of bite-sized videos titled ‘Moments of Mindfulness’ feature noted corporate wellbeing specialist Nick Stolerman and are designed to share wellbeing techniques that can be easily practised in any meeting room set up. Our ‘Morning Mindfulness’ session can be added to the start of the day to help bring a sense of calm and provide clarity for delegates, with ‘Recharge and Refocus’ perfect for after the midday break to invigorate the senses and combat post-lunch fatigue ahead of the afternoon’s proceedings. In addition, delegates staying overnight with us in one of our 41 boutique bedrooms, can take advantage of an invigorating 'Rise and Shine' session to kickstart the morning and a soothing 'Wind Down' session to promote relaxation before bedtime. Nurturing workplace well-being for a happy and healthy workforce is a business imperative and it’s so important that this philosophy is extended to the events space where delegates convene. Is your wellbeing strategy ready for 2025? Now’s a great time to take a step back and reflect on our wellbeing practices. Are we doing enough to support ourselves and our teams? I’ve seen first-hand how a solid wellbeing strategy can drive engagement and performance. As I think about my own wellbeing goals for 2025 and how I can better support my team, here are a few ideas I’m considering: Mindful Mondays: Starting the week with a little mindfulness can set a positive tone for the days ahead. Whether it’s a short meditation session, a group check-in, or simply encouraging everyone to take a few moments to breathe and refocus. Wellbeing Workshops: I want to organise workshops that equip our team with practical tools and strategies for better mental health. These sessions could cover topics like stress management, work-life balance, and self-care techniques. Real Talk: Keeping the conversation around mental health open and honest is crucial. Fostering an environment where it’s okay to share struggles, seek help, and support one another. It’s important for us all to feel comfortable discussing our mental health and wellbeing without stigma or hesitation. Celebrate the Small Stuff: Sometimes, we get so caught up in chasing big goals that we forget to acknowledge the little victories along the way. I want to make it a priority to celebrate those small wins that keep us motivated and remind us of our progress, no matter how incremental. If you’re also thinking about your wellbeing goals for the upcoming year, I’d love to connect! #Wellbeing #TeamSupport #MentalHealthMatters #EmployeeEngagement
