Although we inadvertently missed National Fentanyl Awareness Day on May 7th, we feel that we still need to recognize that today! U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) urges the public to remain cognizant of the extreme threat of fentanyl in our communities: * Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. Just two milligrams—the equivalent of a few grains of salt—is a potentially lethal dose. * The Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels are hiding fentanyl in fake pills that look like prescription medications, such as oxycodone, Xanax, and Percocet. The cartels are also mixing fentanyl powder into other drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Many of the people poisoned by fentanyl had no idea they were even taking it. * The cartels, their members, and their associates continue using social media applications and encrypted communications platforms to sell pills and powders that are advertised as legitimate medications or other substances, but actually contain fentanyl. * The only safe medications are ones that come from licensed and accredited medical professionals. The CDC has announced that fentanyl is now the leading cause of death among adults 18 to 45 in the United States. In many of these cases the deceased may not have known they were exposed to fentanyl. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), nearly half of all counterfeit pills tested contained a lethal dose of fentanyl. This figure is particularly alarming because it can be difficult to distinguish genuine pills from fake or counterfeit versions. Below are examples provided by the University for Colorado showing how counterfeit pills can be designed to look just like genuine pharmaceuticals. Per the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anesthetic. It is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic. Similar to other opioid analgesics, fentanyl produces effects such as: relaxation, euphoria, pain relief, sedation, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, urinary retention, pupillary constriction, and respiratory depression. Overdose can cause stupor, changes in pupil size, clammy skin, cyanosis, coma, and respiratory failure leading to death. The presence of a triad of symptoms such as coma, pinpoint pupils, and respiratory depression strongly suggests opioid intoxication. #opioids #drugabuse #fentanylinutah

It is refreshing to witness genuine leadership on drug policy reform at the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs. Colombia led a group of 60 countries to call for "transformation in our vision of the world drug policy". The UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, Volker Türk, attended in person and reiterated his call for transformation and responsible regulation. All this and more in my blog below!! #cnd67 #drugpolicy #humanrights
The 'alternative outcome document' championed by Colombia showcases the growing dissent gaining momentum at the heart of the global drug control regime in Vienna. Ann Fordham, Executive Director of the International Drug Policy Consortium, reflects on the High Level segment of #CND67 for the #IDPCblog:
'Starting here. Starting now.' Pro-reform coalition led by Colombia calls time on failed drug war at UN high level drugs meeting.

Recently, the Government of Alberta updated the Alberta substance use surveillance system, an online tool for tracking data on drug and alcohol use within the province. The update included fourth-quarter 2023 data on substance poisoning deaths. Across Alberta, 2,051 people have died from an accidental substance poisoning in 2023 due to the toxic unregulated drug supply. It was revealed that the city of Lethbridge also experienced a record high of 124 lives lost. “On average, that means six people a day died from an overdose in Alberta last year. The vast majority of those deaths come from non-pharmaceutical opioids like fentanyl and heroin.” To read the full article, please visit: https://lnkd.in/guKsygEy. #aawear #alberta #government #lethbridge #substancepoisoning #pwud #pwlle #drugpolicy #saferconsumption #harmreductionworks

President at LaMagna and Associates, LLC (LMA consultants) and Expert Witness, Transnational Drug Trafficking, Asian Organized Crime, Cybercrime, Trade Secrets and Brand Protection
The Commission on Synthetic Opioids Report published February 8, 2022 The Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking, established under Section 7221 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, was charged with examining aspects of the synthetic opioid threat to the United States—specifically, with developing a consensus on a strategic approach to combating the illegal flow of synthetic opioids into the United States. The Commission was composed of representatives of seven executive branch departments and agencies, four sitting members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and four subject-matter experts from the private sector chosen for their deep experience and expertise on this topic. The Commission Report identified five pillars with specific action items: -Develop a unified, central body to coordinate planning, implementation, and evaluation of all U.S. drug policies; -Disrupt drug supply through targeted oversight and enforcement; -Make public health demand-reduction approaches central in the fight against opioid trafficking to reduce the number of potential buyers; -Collaborate with other countries involved in the production and distribution of synthetic opioids and their chemical precursors; -Improve surveillance and data analysis to allow for more timely and effective interventions. How much progress has been made in implementing these recommendations by the current administration and where is that being reported and tracked ? https://lnkd.in/dpXFYbWt
