Paediatric Registrar and Higher Degree Research Candidate with an interest in genetics, health equity, and intellectual disability.
So proud to share that our systematic literature review was selected as the #2 article of 2023 in BMJ Quality and Safety! https://lnkd.in/g78eYc6p #GeneEQUAL looked at barriers and enabling factors of informed consent for people with intellectual disability in healthcare. We found six themes and highlighted these as ways that the current health system can support accessible and inclusive informed consent. These factors were 1) health professionals’ attitudes and lack of education, (2) inadequate accessible health information, (3) involvement of support people, (4) systemic constraints, (5) person- centred informed consent and (6) effective communication between health professionals and patients. At the heart of GeneEQUAL is co-production, which means we work closely and collaboratively with people with intellectual disability as co-researchers. Working together is always such an insightful process and I am continuing to learn each day how I can be more inclusive, accessible and respectful as a health care professional. Happy to see our paper published in Social Science & Medicine - Qualitative Research in Health Journal (https://lnkd.in/gR4AXs7a). Financial and staffing barriers threaten the implementation of the evidence-based services provided by SSPs, harming their ability to address health outcomes like infectious disease transmission and opioid overdose mortality. While addressing stigma against PWUD represents a long-term solution to barriers at the federal level, state level responses like harm reduction friendly funding and capacity building may facilitate better implementation and health outcomes in the near-term. 📢 Public Health Wales Report on Drug-Related Deaths 📢 Today, Public Health Wales unveiled their annual report on drug-related deaths. Let’s dive into some of the key findings: 🔹 Opioid Fatalities: The report identified 125 opioid-related deaths in Wales. Among these, 64 were linked to heroin or morphine, while the remaining 61 involved other opioids like methadone, codeine, or tramadol. 🔹 Naloxone’s Lifesaving Impact: Naloxone played a pivotal role in preventing fatalities, being administered in 303 overdose interventions last year. 🔹 Community Naloxone Use: Public spaces accounted for 27% of naloxone interventions in 2022-23 (up from 26% in 2021-22). Remember, even if you’re not directly affected by opioids, carrying naloxone could save a life. https://lnkd.in/eQsz4iX8

Our new empirical study on advese events, where we investigated the estimates of medication-related harms among blinded vs. unblinded trials, after adjusted the covariates, we found that lack of blinding of participants and health care providers in randomized controlled trials may underestimate medication-related harms, by 32%, regardless for objective or subjective outcomes. However, lack of blinding of trial outcome assessors may not necessarily influence estimates of harm effects. https://lnkd.in/g6-T5X4G

B.C. government addresses safe supply allegations "BC Premier David Eby and Mental Health and Addictions Minister Jennifer Whiteside have denied opposition claims of a "secret report" by an American professor on safe supply drugs being diverted to the streets. The report, said to involve organized crime, was actually commissioned by Dr. Bonnie Henry, the independent public health officer. Eby emphasized that his office had no involvement and any release of the report is up to Dr. Henry. Health Minister Adrian Dix clarified that there was a public request for proposal to analyze the impact of prescribed pharmaceutical drugs reaching the illicit street market. Jonathan Caulkins was paid $11,500 for this analysis, a topic frequently raised by opposition politicians. The British Columbia government maintains its support for destigmatization, including a pilot project that decriminalizes the possession of hard drugs, in response to the pressing toxic drug crisis. However, this approach has faced criticism and concerns from various quarters, including Jonathan Caulkins, a researcher and professor at Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh." 🔎 Why Stay Updated?
