Embracing inner strength and beauty with the incredible Annabel against the backdrop of Durham city centre on a crisp Saturday morning. Modelling goes beyond mere poses – it’s about cultivating empowerment and confidence within oneself. Annabel’s inspiring journey reminds us that challenges can be a catalyst for growth, opening doors to unexpected opportunities and new directions in life. Following the shoot, we sought warmth and decided to go for a coffee and spot of breakfast (thank you, next one is on me!). Of course we engaged in some chit chat, but delving deeper, I sparked the discussion about Annabel’s path into modelling, and her response shed a whole new light on the shoot and the resulting images, leaving me contemplating its significance. Annabel had faced her own set of trials and challenges, though I won’t go into the details, as it is not my story to tell. As a photographer, my objective is to capture images that hold purpose, emotion, and context. After hearing Annabel’s story and witnessing her in action, I now wish for this shoot to celebrate her transformative journey into a model, the scars that have fostered her confidence to explore new avenues, and also the positive impact she has had on other individuals currently in the care system, by making tough decisions and challenging authority. The experience has taught me that photography isn’t merely about pressing a shutter button and capturing aesthetically pleasing images. To consistently create powerful visuals, there must be substance behind each frame. Although my original aim may not have been to convey confidence, purpose, female strength, and the triumph over dark times, as I edit these images with Annabel’s story in mind, I believe they effectively illustrate all of those elements.
