The world is much more interesting than we realize on a day-to-day basis. The image you're seeing is of speedboats moving a floating island on Lake Chippewa in Wisconsin. This lake was created in 1923 by the flooding of a large swamp. Today, it houses a giant floating island that moves and blocks an important bridge, and almost every year it needs to be moved by local boatmen who work on a team of up to 25 speedboats. Soon after the creation of the lake, many peatlands began to rise to the surface and became perfect locations for growing seeds of plants carried by wind and wild birds. Over the years, plants — from grasses to trees — began to grow and their roots caused these floating swamps to grow. Today, they vary in size. The smallest equals one parking space, the largest of which measures 40 acres and bears the name "Forty Acre Swamp." Almost every year, dozens of local boat owners band together to pull you away from a bridge that connects the east and west sides of the lake. Because floating islands like the Forty Acres Swamp are habitat for various animal species, they are protected by law and cannot be dismembered. Video: AirFox Photography

UPDATE: After 2 weeks of trialling the deer repellent we have found it to be significant (see before & after photos - 2 weeks apart) Number of trees sprayed: The clean label spray was sprayed on 500 trees - we are continuing our trial and increasing the number of trees. Deer species in area: Roe & Sika. A busy weekend dealing with home stuff meant little opportunity for wildlife photography. So, instead I took a stripped down kit and a packet of sandwiches to the office today with the aim of concentrating on insect photography at lunchtime. I only had twenty minutes or so, but the two ponds at the Met Office provided a good opportunity as the fringing vegetation was thronging with newly-emerged Azure Damselflies. Like electric-blue darning needles, these insects are normally flighty, but with today's weather being a little more overcast my impression was that they were allowing me a slightly closer approach than they would normally. The cloud also made the natural light less harsh, which meant I didn't need to use fill-flash to soften direct sunlight. I have many more images to process, but this one caught my eye as I like the composition with the blade of grass drawing the eye onto the subject. The Azure Damselfly can be found across most of Britain - south of the Central Belt in Scotland - and across Ireland. Look for it in most areas with ponds or other freshwater habitats. There are several similar but rarer species, but the Azure Damselfly is a good species for any dragonfly enthusiast to begin with as identifying this common and widespread species allows you to spot something rarer when the opportunity arises. I find the Canon R7 with Canon 55-250mm lens is a good dragonfly and butterfly combination, but for smaller species I might try using one of my extension tubes to provide closer focus and more frame-filling shots. #WildlifePhotography #Dragonfly #Damselfly #Devon #Wildlife #MacroPhotography #CanonR7

Having reviewed and compiled all the historical records of bird observations in Bahrain, there are certain singular records for which one might question the quality, even possible validity, of a few individual species observations from the past. How good were the observer(s), and what supporting evidence was provided when the observations were included on the official list? The old records available do not include field sketches or notes. Field guides at that time were basic, the internet a generation away, and supporting photographic evidence virtually non-existent. Today thanks to digital photography complete with metadata, it is certainly much easier for rarity committees to access new records. However, in the good old days, pet shops' escapes or releases were not such a serious problem. I regularly visit such shops across the Kingdom, with only the trade in CITES species controlled; I am often amazed at what can be found for sale. That said, every now and again, a bird turns up that is on the list but has not been seen for aeons since, one which makes you appreciate the pure quality and skill of the old birders and their ability to identify it. One such species turned up this last week, a Yellow-throated Sparrow. Our first record was in 1975, with a second recorded in 1992. It is a rather bland, an easily overlooked species, most certainly not one that stands out in a crowd. Fortunately, our solitary BTO ringer, Abdulla Kabi, was out and about down south, mist-netting passing warblers and managed to trap and ring the sparrow. It took him some time to identify the species even in the hand, it was a new species for him. He instantly sent me the pictures; I consulted my books and sent the images on to Neil Tovey, a fellow local birder and Rarity Committee member, we were both able to confirm the ID.
